sound problem
« on: 11 September 2007, 22:35:47 »
Hi
I wanna play glest while i listen to music, i don't want the glest sounds, but glest will complain...
Code: [Select]
[pedro@linx ~]$ glest
open /dev/[sound/]dsp: Device or resource busy
Exception: Couldn't open audio device.
OpenAL Vendor: [pedro@linx ~]$ glest --no-sound
open /dev/[sound/]dsp: Device or resource busy
Exception: Couldn't open audio device.
OpenAL Vendor: [pedro@linx ~]$
...when I try to run it with my amarok playing.
I've got Fedora 7, KDE 3.5.7, and my glest version is 2.0.1, if it helps....
Thank you. :-)

ps: sorry if this is not the right place to post this question. I thought I should have posted it on the bugs forum, but it's not exactly a bug is it?;
and sorry for the english speaking.. I can't speak neither spanish, nor english, I'm from Brasil xP

Welcome, this has already been discussed in http://www.glest.org/glest_board/viewtopic.php?t=2715  ignore my rambling post and go to the bottom where there is a suggestion from MatzeB.

Hope it helps.

...I mean, isn't there an easier way? :x

But seriously talking, isn't there a way of just telling glest not to try to use sound, instead of configuring alsa (I don't even know what is it) to accept sound output from 2 applications at once (I also am not sure if MatzeB meant exactly this... as you can see, I'm not this smart, :P)

Hi! You can simply use the OSS/commercial audio driver (now free) instead of ALSA in linux. It has built-in virtual mixer that can play up to 18 streams at the same time.

I have made it so you can run without sound now, but you will need to edit and recompile the source. This fix should work with any version of Glest.

Go to http://www.glest.org/glest_board/viewtopic.php?p=11980 for more information.
