Terran Mod?
« on: 28 September 2007, 13:40:12 »
Time has come to show some of my progress. Just so you know, I'm nowhere near a beta. I finally finished 1 unit, the missile ship, but not the sound effects, I'll do that later

I think the creation of the tileset was not too difficult.  :D
But  it's really a very good idea!

Here you go everyone, some more teaser pics :-)

reigoskeiter: Yes, it's all done with 3DS Max.

myles: Um, it's the aftermath of 2 missile ships obliterating each other. It's the explosion on the left and the smoke on the right.

There's still plenty left to do until beta release. I'll make sure to update everyone on my progress. Keep your fingers crossed...

I've just noticed that the background actually fits really well. Instead of looking stupid, it really works with the ships. The "squares" of each picture doesn't affect the outcome, I like it. Wow, you've really done a magnificent job. One more thing: How did you get the particle for the laser on the laser frigate? I didn't know glest supported a static "beam" attack type. Or maybe it's just an attack with high energy. Oh, and I also like the gnat scout fighters. My strategies in almost any RTS is to go with quantity opposed to quality.

This is amazing. I was working on a space type mod, (can be seen on the wiki) but this blows it out of the water! The laser is incredible! That background really looks like they are floating in space.

The only thing that worries me is what you will do about resource models. Any ideas about that yet?

I know, I know. I still have to do the resource models, ugh...  I have a general idea what I'm going to do. I plan on having Command Points, Ore, Gas, and a type of crystal.

I have to do some testing. I'm not sure if you have to click on the asteroid or on the ground below it. I'll find out soon enough, just 1 more ship to make.

Actually, the beam isn't as fast as it should be. It has a linear speed of 40. I wanted to make it faster, but any higher makes it constantly miss. That in turn caused the game to lag alot, because extra particles weren't disappearing when they were supposed to.

I think it's a good idea to use little planets as ressources.
How does the "gnat scout fighter" animate? I hope it rotates!

Fast shots: I also had trouble with fast shots! My indian thunderbird throws flashes when attacking. If the shots are too fast there are two problems:
1. It depends on the hardware if you get a Lag or not
2. If the shot is too fast you often get problems with the hits! There are nearly no hits, when it's too fast.

Probabaly you can create the shot by yourself, by simply adding the beam to the models attack animation! This will be displayed immedialtly and has no hit problems.

And just a hint:
Please backup your work! It's looking very nice and it would be too bad if everything is lost!

Interesting idea to make the beam effect part of the animation. But I don't think that'll work. As is, the game isn't well lit-up at all. I'm curious about that now, but I suspect it will end up looking kinda bland.

Planets as resources? I don't think that's possible. Maybe they could be used for people resources, but I plan on diving into the source after I make the beta version of my mod.

Instead of the goldstone model simply create a gold planet model and use it instead. This is possible without problems. You can create different kind of planets like iron copper energy planet and use them as ressources. They should look a little bit like planets on your background image. For this no change in the code is needed! Only xml-editing and moddleing

The Beam effect: I don't think there will be any problems with it, this will work. The only question is , will it look good ?  ::)

I finally got the destroyer in the game. I don't think i'll be going higher than a destroyer class ship. There is, of course, cruisers, battleships, and dreadnoughts above a destroyer.

I might be putting defensive turrets in the game. Probably not, so don't get your hopes up. I need to get started on those pesky resources now. I don't wanna, really i don't, lol.

I'm gonna need somebody to do all the sound effects. Or at least somebody to point me at a site with tons of sci-fi sounds. Currently, just tons of placeholders from the original install. I already know what music I'm gonna use. And I'm not making a separate battle music, I'm leaving that one out.

Code: [Select]

Well, so far I've only found two sites containing free sound effects:

http://http://www.deusx.com/freesoundeffects.html
http://http://www.therecordist.com/pages/downloads.html

I know, the sites are terrible, but one or two sound files are decent. Most of them are too long, but you can shorten them with something like Audacity. The explosion from deusx might work. Anyway, this is my 5 minute contribution. I'll search for more tomorrow, it's getting quite late now.

It's very good!

But the next ressource should have another color! brown looks so dull.
What about the battlefield? You can make water look like an asteroid field.With these barricades you can create more interisting maps.

Probabaly you should think about a complete environment change ( a new tileset) .
trees->resource asteroide 1 8 ( you can have different models for the same resource)
stones-> resource astroide 2
gold -> resource astroide 3

water -> asteroids field / or some kind of milky way
all ground types-> nothing(backgroundimage)
and so on....

By this you can use existing maps wich are AI tested for interisting battles, but thats just an idea.

I'll think about it. With the tileset, I was actually sampling from a real picture the hubble took. I could try to find another one, but it's a bish since 64x64 is so tiny. I'm not an actual artist, I wish I could draw, so I have to resort to other means  :wicked:

Well I can't use barricades, all the attack ships are all air types. The research vessels, the stations, and the turrets are all gonna be land types. So it is kinda pointless for me to try to make a map that will force everybody through a choke-point. Since they will just go over it anyways.

I also had that idea about making the water look like a gas or to give the map a nebula look. Gotta go, I'll add more later.
