There is no demo. Just explore every unit's build and produce abilities.

The building isn't really yellow, it is on fire. I think it is the main building of the Magic faction. Try the Tech faction, it seems like you've only tried the Magic faction.

There are mods you can download to use different factions.

For the Magic tech tree follow this link:

For the Tech tech tree follow this one:

That shows you what is required for each thing to be built.

It doesn't show the cost of each thing though, and I don't see the stats of the units anywhere for easy comparison.

Haven't played the game for more than a year, then decided to try it again on my new computer with Windows Vista, and it hasn't changed at all.

Tech beats Magic easily it seems.  Although I found an old post of mine I had saved on my hard drive, where someone explained that to win with Magic you have to build up golems for defense, and then move onto dragons call at an archmage tower to then dominate.

Most of the scenarios listed as hard, very hard, or impossible, etc, all seem rather impossible.

Tech against Magic CPU Ultra is no problems though.

I suggest you start with Tech it easier to handle.  Just remember, you can have more than one barracks, have your farm produce cows in advance, watch what resources your people are harvesting to make sure you don't run out of something you need, and never stop making peasants to do more work.  And remember to read the upgrades for units at the blacksmith, noting the cost, and what units it helps, before deciding which ones to research.
