I think there's a couple of thing said there that can be confusing. First there's the issue of Debian and Ubuntu. As I understand it, Ubuntu is a distro that is built upon the foundation of another distro called Debian. So in that sense, Ubuntu IS Debian in that it uses a lot of code from Debian, adding their own code on top of that.

The other thing I saw in that thread that might lead to confusion is the mention of packages for 64bit architecture. when you use precompiled packages for your system, you need for those packages to be compiled for your architecture (32bit or 64bit). This is irrelevant of Ubuntu or Debian, it is the compiled packages of those software packages destined for either 32bit processor or 64bit depending on your needs.

@Festor, is that your own experience or verified somewhere?

Because I personally never had a Debian package that caused any problems. I even use some converted RedHat packages.

From what I now Ubuntu tries to stay as Debian compatible as possible.

Of course you have to always be careful if you use a pakage that is system relevant, but user programms like games should be save.

I saw this 3.1 version:
http://www.getdeb.net/app/Glest

Is this using the official binary for 32bit Version? If not, things will get out of sync and crash in multiplayer mode!

( how do people know that they should come to the irc when using the ubuntu package? )

Try Megaglest! Improved Engine / New factions / New tilesets / New maps / New scenarios

That's the reason why the multiplayer incompatibility should be fixed. Because it's impossible to force everyone to use the same binary. That's a nice workaround .

Some hints:

1. I'm quite shure the problem is the ATI card ( is the driver correctly installed? Which linux ? ubuntu? )
2. try to change the resolution back to your normal ( ctrl+alt +"numpad +" (or "numpad -" ) this should change the resolution. If it doesn't you have a crashed diplaydriver so try number 3
3. with crl+alt+backspace you can restart the x-server

you can play around with the settings in glest.ini to get the game running ( for example change resolution .... )
