You can pretty much ignore the message which pops up in the console if you don't have Python. Python is only needed for scripts (mainly import/export) and it's not essential to have for a newbie, Blender will run fine without it!

I've been Using Blender for about three years now and I love it! My main tip is that you shouldn't try to learn everything about blender, after three years I  still don't know everything or even expect to.

A good place to start would be Greybeard's video tutorials they're really helpful for newbies.

Is it good? Blender made me buy 3ds max  :) . There wasn't one export function that worked (didn't try g3d) and i needed .3ds objects. Anyway, the g3d exporter should work fine, and Blender has a wonderful tutorial on their website. I think it was something similar to 'From to noob to pro'.

I haven't tested Blender on Windows yet, but on Linux it is just amazing for a free programm.
I'm just about to finish my first mesh. A human base 1k tris which I intent to use for my Glest mods. Took me 5 days.
Almost half that time was for studying human anatomy and almost another half for finding a good mesh topology and aktually creating it.
The rest was to lern how to use blender (;
One tip: it might helps to temporarily forget what you now about other programms's funktions.

Blender noob to pro is probably the best tut available, just google it.
