Glest 3.1.1 Released
« on: 26 February 2008, 20:04:26 »
This is a small update, a couple of features:

- Improved shadows: They are more detailed, darker, and they use the alpha in the trees.
- Command line interface: You can launch Glest from the command line  as a server or client.

How to play:

Windows: Download the installerand follow the instructions.

Linux: Download data and binaries.

The source code is also available but as usual everybody in an online game has to be running the same binaries.

Please remember to visit our IRC channel (irc.freenode.net #glest) to find people to play online.

A screenshot of the new shadows:

Shadows???  Thas great but why did you guys remove the option to remove fog of war???  I mean yeah it might interfere with playing online but you could always switch it back on...

The option is still there in the ini, just not in the configurator, since it will make the game crash online.

Does this version fix the problem with the new ATI Catalyst 8 and above drivers. Since there is a hack to get by it in windows but not linux.

Also if anyone would like I can create an updated package for the science faction. And maybe redo that mega pack with Indians since  it's done kinda strange.

Sadly this new version still does not work with ATI close source drivers. It would be nice if someone would look into fixing this.

Does it not work with recent windows catalyst drivers? I have an ati card, i could update them and look into it....

Yep that post didn't help me at all. I can't roll back the video driver because the kernel I'm running now was not out at the time of the older driver. And I'm not in windows.

Is there a linux version of atioglxx.dll that could also be placed in the local game folder. I thought maybe it was like the libGL.so but it didn't work.

Here is a pack with the Indians and Science factions as well as the jungle tileset. It is a zip file and will work for linux windows mac what ever. Simple unzip it directly in your glest folder. The factions are copied directly into your magitech tree so no need to switch trees or anything.

Code: [Select]
indians-science-jungle.zip
I will have my own Myah OS addon package for glest but the above will work for anyone.

Can you try the version on the SVN (3.1.2-wip) and see if it makes a difference for you?

Yeah I just saw that on the sf site. But wasn't sure if there was special tree called wip or something. My svn knowledge isn't that great. I'm pulling it right now I will let you know when I get it compiled.

Hey that's awesome. It fixed the shadows flickering and it also fixed the building drag problem. It actually runs alot better then it does in windows. Because in windows the shadows flicker and the frame rate isn't so high. But I just ran it at 1440x900 and it was smooth as butter.

But I did notice another problem at the start screen the water reflects different colors really fast. Like purple to blue and so on. When you load a game the water in the fountain also does the same and the players you have that should be blue are purple and if you move the screen sometimes change to blue again. Its strange.

But there is one last thing I would like to know. Currently when I compile glest and package it. I have to copy the glest binary into the /usr/share/glest folder where I have the data and create a /usr/bin/glest script that changes directories into  /usr/share/glest and launches the game from there. This is kinda a hack and should not really be done. Is there a way I can set that data directory when I configure glest so I can install binary to /usr/bin/glest and then it will find the data itself?

Oh by the way I'm running

AMD +4400 dual core 2.3Ghz
ATI x1950 pro 512mb
ELITEGROUP A770-MA mobo
2Gig of 6400 Ram.

linux kernel 2.6.24.2
Under xfce 4.4.2
ati fglrx 8.02

But I will be changing the CPU to a phenom 9600 quad core and the ATI to the HD 3870 tomorrow. Just because I want the AMD spider platform.
