Well, i must admit i wish i knew how to do good textures, but here is a tutorial which i got by a guy from another forum.
http://http://www.the3rdage.net/item-166?apage=187#page
If you want to use GIMP i can help you concerning buttons/functions. So for example that you can keep the teamcolor of a original texture or which save-options to choose that it works with the game.
//EDIT: Another tutorial with gimp
http://http://otothecleaner.free.fr/tutorials/Gimpit/gimpit1/gimpit.html
//EDIT2:
I just try to improve my skills.. heres a nice article, i think it should help for tecturmaking with GIMp. It describes a good tool
http://http://www.2d-digital-art-guide.com/gimp-dodge.html
//EDIT3:
OK, i tried my best to act like the tutorials describe. Heres the result. I think its nice, its done with Gimp and i use NO pictures. I painted the base color to an area and used the dodge/burn tool to add detail(shadow/light). Then i used the smudge tool and adjusted contrast and brightness.
