Like how does food work?

You got one value next to another value which I assume is the max value. Then you got another value next to that which is a number with a + sign on it which is what is increased when you make things like cows.

No online guide, no ingame guide, no tutorial. Geez.

i think that's what it meant u can check it out urself by making a one player map and then keep producing units until the + becomes -

It means that it's making that much food every few seconds.

99 is the max amout of units possible to be made
You mean fighting units? Or do you mean food units like pigs & cows? Or do you mean units of food? Which ever you mean, I don't understand.

45 is the current unit being made

Eh?

Ok let me take a stab at this. (I suppose I could puzzle it out in the game till something clicks but that sounds like a headache)

Humans can only have 99 units of things that move (soldiers, workers, pigs/cows) 45 would be how many you currently have? Why does magic not have such a limit? Or do they, its just invisible?

My other guess would have been that 99 would be how many stores of food you can hold and 45 would be how much you have stored now. But if that were the case, the amount you have stored now would increase by the value after + till it reached the max of 99. So that can't be the case.

It is the case. 99 is how much can be stored in the current bunch of buildings that store it (the Castle and the barn). 45 is how much food you have at the time. The plus and the number are how much you're getting. In the xml of the food resource, it says what the interval between the adding of the food and subtracting of health from your units is (it subtracts health if you don't have any food...).

You could also say that energy sources are more direct. If one gets destroyed the energy is gone imidiately.
Food has some kind of buffer, when your animals die, the food is still stored, giving you more time to rebuild.
