LOADING TIME EXTREMELY SLOW
« on: 17 June 2008, 12:28:25 »
Hi,

The game loads on a mac for 5 seconds.
Loading time on 512mg ram/1.8 ghz amd - 10 seconds

Loading times on 3 different intel dualcores 2.33 GB Ram / 2 Gb ram - vary from 5 - 15 minutes - once it is finished the game is fully playable and no problems...

WTF?

A Targa file was in some weird uncompressed form 3.5 mb. I guess on some Xp there are problems and slow opening of a some TGA files.

And may be glest loads on every "loaded element" windows, new the background which was the troubled TGA.

I also saw that loadingtimes are very slow in windows(XP).
On the same computer it's much much slower on windows than on linux!?
But the windows loading times are very different!?! I think they are 5 to 10 times slower then the linux loading time.

I also tested it here at work and I have to wait more than 1 minute until it starts and this machine isn't slow! ( I started my new tileset with the megapack_v2 techtree)

Intel core 2 duo 6600 2,4GHz
2GB RAM
Geforce 7300GT

At home ( on slower computers!) I have a max loading time of about 10  seconds in linux.

It may depend on what you are loading, though I've never seen it that slow. The original magitech takes about 8 seconds for me on a laptop running vista home premium.

It might be the central processing unit (cpu) which is in your case, intel. Are all your applications closed?

Is the game waiting for I/O?
It is possible to put std::cout commands in the glest code, recompile and watch terminal output in which part of code the game "frozen".

I agree. I have windows vista and linux on the same computer (intel core 2 duo E6750, nvidia 8600GT and 2MB ram). When i launch a new game, loading time of windows is a lot slower. But after that, when you launch another new game then the loading time is similar (I don't know why, may be because it has already been loaded on ram or because windows make less problems to load it a second time)

There is another advantage in linux (compared to windows): when i try to recruit a unit by clicking in the icon of that unit lot of time; every click mean a unit recruited. In windows when i click fast on the icon, may be 50% of my click mean a recruited unit.

But there is a problem in linux: in multiplayer you can't play with 4 players without having horrible lags.
