Just a few questions
« on: 5 July 2008, 17:34:10 »
I have a number of questions on various things. Some may seem noob like, others may be impossible to answer. Feel free to post your own questions here, or to answer only a few. Any help is thanked in advance. Please make your answers polite, and do not sound aggressive. If you feel this is in the wrong forum, feel free to move it.

Now the first question...

1) Can I have a unit go on water for navel battles in normal glest? [Not really - @kukac@] darn

2) Is it possible to have an entire faction (maybe tech tree) navel style so that you can have an 'open sea' map? [Not really - @kukac@] pity

3) Can I copy the entire glest_3.1.2 folder and make the GAE in that copied folder? [Yes, and I think, it's the best solution - @kukac@] Good...

4) Where's the best place for c++ coding tutorials? [Google - @kukac@] Thanks

UPDATE//
5) Is there any way to allow guarding, patrolling, pets, etc; in regular glest? (I doubt you can... but it never hurt to ask...)

UPDATE//
6) Why can't I instant message on any of the glest boards? It just says its 'disabled'...

7) Whats the best place for finding textures (such as bark, wood, bricks, etc;) on the internet?

Thats all for now, but this post may be edited at any time to allow more questions.[/i]

5) There is a way of guarding with long ranged units. You have to use the "Stand Ground" button or something like that and it will attack anything in range. It sucks with melee because they have a range of 1... not very good if you ask me.

There's currently no way of patrolling or following. But you can use attack ground for it to attack anything in its path.

By guarding, I think he means get a unit to protect a certain other unit, like in Age of Kings.

There IS a pet system in original glest, but only for the Magics.  It's be nice if someone could make pets for the Tech... Wolves, Bears, or just hound dogs.

There's a way to have pets in magic (by pets, I mean units that are summoned and die when the owner or summoner dies. These are from the GAE, but I'm curious if anything in the GAE is also possible in original glest)

Impossible without hacking/glitching. And the point of the beta is not to take advantage of the glitches, but to report them.

Why does PMing not work on the glest boards?

Why? I mean, suppose that someone wants to talk to someone without having to make a topic like: Hey XXX, read this! and not everyone checks back to their posts...

Oh well. Does anyone agree with the idea of making a group to rate ideas for suggestions for Glest (Look for the topic in the mods section *good idea man*)

Hello!

First of all, I must say, that you are genius!
I can’t understand, how you could develop such a great work with a really small bunch of people.
I would like to work in the game development industry, so I’m studying some open-source game code now, before making a demo, to attach to my cv.
My problem is: I think that your a* algorithm is the so called greedy algorithm in a proper sense, but I’m not sure. As I see, you only use the heuristic in the node-selecting part, and don’t care for the cost/deep of the node. Am I right, or is there any trick, that I couldn’t find out?

Ps.: Sorry for my english, it’s not the best, but I’m working on it. =)
