Cheats (yes, I know but first read)
« on: 14 July 2008, 12:35:34 »
I personally would like cheat codes for testing my new factions (Now I always have to change all files). Resource cheats would be quite interesting so I can directly test the whole unit tree without having to play the whole game over and over.
EDIT: also fast build/train mode

And of course ... Cheats are just fun...

you could change the starting units and stuffs though...
just go to glest->techs->fraction->magic/tech->
then there should be a XML document where you can right click it and open it with notepad.then you can change the startin units and resources and stuffs...but it will also apply to the AI though... :D

Haha, fun . There is a easy way to be sure that AI doesn't have the cheat : Just modify/increase tech faction and make a new game with only magic faction for AI and you are tech :D (or add a god like faction with invincible units whitch cost 1 gold).

I will try to cheat in multiplayer by increaseing a faction . As far I know the host decide of every thing so I need to be host to do that. But I HOPE that people who will join will have an error message like = " You don't have the same data than the host " . If I have not this message then I will post it.

But personally, I don't think we need cheats. In a legimate game, they take out all the fun. The only use for them is to check every bit of a new faction that you make, and we don't even need them there because it's a good idea to make sure that it's possible to win. Also, make sure it's possible to beat them with another faction.

In short, cheats aren't needed!  8)

Still I think the decrease training/building/resource gathering time cheat is very useful (I had to copy all factions and replace all produce times with 1 which took me a lot of time.

It could be useful, but in a legimate game, it takes the fun out when you defeat the foe too easily. And when testing a new faction, it's a good idea to see for real what the speed is, so you know if it should be faster, slower, or just right. You gotta test it for glinches and everything. Other wise nobodies gonna download any mods you make.

I love cheats ^^
I remember I played Glest for first time, it was extremly difficult.
Cheats make more Fun, if there cool cheats like e.g. an Ufo that eats your enemies ^^
After a short time the game will be boring, yes,  if you make it the player with the cheats to easy.
It is a complex thema - we need a good concept.

A first idea from me:
-You have to wait before you can activate a new cheat.
-(not so good) you can use every cheat just 1 times.

This will keep Fun, is doesn't make it the Player to easy.

Idawin...
Now you made a point.
And Mictes, if there were to be cheats, it should be like this, you gotta unlock them, ie//defeat magic 3 times, play as tech 4 times, create a new tileset, score a grand total of 100,000 points and so on. Perhaps a Mythic enemy difficulty level which is tougher than Ultra for those who win at least 100 matches. That would be cool, but I think we'd need a save function for these.

And for testing, a special testing mode that has no enemy, but instant wait times and unlimited resources.

There... :P

Dude, did you know you just resurected a topic that's been dead since last year?

Besides the point would be a testing mode for easier developement of factions. There was a small discussion of a developement toolbox once in the GAE forum.

I understand you are new here, so please consider taking a look at the Forum Guidelines to help learn the boards. People aren't always too appreciative when someone resurects a very old topic that no one has posted in for a long time without an important excuse.

Anyway, welcome to the forums! Nice to see you. ;D

For testing, you just set your resources XMLs up in the millions, and set up a custom game with no player!

I think it might be possible to have no player with just a few minor changes to the source, namely the code that forces one player to be existing. I saw it before, though I can't remember where. I think it was the new game state c++ file... Of course, some other code might clash, no way to tell until it's tested, but I can't bloody compile. Missing some 'zconfig.h'...
