Underworld Faction - Images Available!

It looks like the military tech tree is eternally doomed, since the AI always find a new way to muck things up... Until I find out what went wrong there, I am going to make one last, final attempt to make a working mod. (Odd, I made one before that had 4 factions and no troubles at all...) This mod, will be one that will fit in magitech, and will be one that has near unlimited ideas... THE UNDERWORLD FACTION!

This is the main plan for the faction. More details on the units are below.

I'm going to make the units simular to the pictures. I am going to make this faction completely balanced so that it fits in magitech, and therefore, it will have no new resources, (sorry) it will use energy rather than food, and because of that, I need a building of some sort for producing energy. (I will have that building produce invisible, spaceless units to create more energy!) Please leave ideas and/or comment. No flames please! :D

I believe the word you're looking for is "rogue", meaning scoundrel.  Rouge is a makeup and a red polish used on metal and glass.

Also, that's significantly more units than magic or tech has.  I'd narrow it down to ten or eleven if I were you.

If your having problems with AI I suggest that you build the mod in stages. Starting with a main structure and worker units then a barracks and basic warriors etc.
This way it is easier to tweak each unit as you go and see how the AI handles them. Its a shame that we don't have a knowledgeable AI coder on the forums to tell us how it works.

The strength of a faction doesn't matter how many units it has. Tech has a total of 20 units including buildings. This faction has 23. That's not too bad. I will make sure that it is balanced. Because it has more units means more diversity, and makes it more interesting. But it shouldn't affect the strength of the faction.

BTW, I heard that some others have had this AI problem even with the tech faction! This is getting bad, does anyone know what is wrong? Hmm, where's Martino? ?

Oh, and how do we build in stages?

Well, if you really wanna go through that much effort, then go for it.  I wouldn't be surprised if having diversity (and therefore versatility) creates an unbalance, though.  Imagine playing "rock paper scissors" against somebody who had all three options while you could only choose paper and rock.

I think what he means is that you should get a few units working at a time and make sure the AI does okay with them and then once they're stable, introduce another unit, then another, and so on.  That way you can tell exactly when the problem occurs. (i.e. everything worked before I introduced Unit X, so Unit X is causing the problem)  It's the same reason programmers do so much testing even when they're still "works in progress".  It's a lot easier than doing the whole thing and then trying to go back and isolate that one malicious line of code when you find out there's a bug.

I'd suggest that you start out by getting your Dungeon and Slave working first, since everything stems from them and they're the most crucial units to have working properly.  When you're sure they're doing what they're supposed to do, then introduce some more.

Yea, I agree with Omega.  It doesn't really matter how many units there are; you can still make it balanced.  TechII has tons of units, but it's still going to be balanced.  The problem with having so many units is that you might get partway done and then abandon it...  (Think about Hellfire and Military ::) )

I'll try working in stages, but the odd thing that I do when making mods is that I make all the models first, then I make all the images, then the upgrades, the particle xmls, then finally the unit xmls. I know it's weird, but usually when I do this, there is only about 5 to 7 errors or less, compared to the 30+ I used to get. (that means improvement!)

In other business, I really badly need a name for a building that produces energy. Then I can start making models for that. Credit will be given to the person to give me a name I like and maybe an idea of what it should look like.

I've just finished the chaos models, and the Armageddon is really sweet. The chaos is extremely expensive, and very slow. It also needs a massive 1000 seconds to charge up the EP to use it's attack. However, Armageddon deals 500 damage to EVERYONE on the arena, including your allies and units. It floods the whole screen with demonic black and red (a model splash, not a normal particle splash) It is very useful. It can't kill anything, but it will easily weaken a unit by as much as 1/3 to 1/2 of their health. Do not use more than one at a time, or you can whipe out your own army completely. (the enemies too, but...)

The idea of an arrow stab attack just seems pretty silly to me.  Arrows aren't exactly the most sturdy things in the world and would probably break if you tried to stab somebody with them.  I'd just give the rogue some kind of punch-dagger or something.  Maybe incorporate a bayonet or knuckle spikes into the bow handle so he can punch somebody with it if they get too close?  Rogues are dirty fighters, anyway.

After making the tech tree's outline, I decided that the rogue will stick with the bomb arrow, which is an explosive arrow requiring the explosives upgrade. (See picture of outline in first post)

Verarticus, there is nothing wrong with the giants, and the underworld faction is also a monster faction. The rogue's mask hides it's face, making them as sinister as your imagination.

Modman, you can use my models in your faction in the following conditions:
1) Wait until the faction is released. I don't mean to sound selfish, but wait until I have either a beta or something, unless I say so otherwise.
2) Give me credit, which you said you'd do, so it looks good. You can use models from military.

I'll post the chaos's Armageddon attack soon. I couldn't do all arena damage, since it lags too much and all, so I have a very powerful (about 1000 damage in the center) attack with a HUGE splash. As I said, it takes a long time to charge it, but wrecks havoc! I tested it by putting a chaos in the magitech faction, and was very pleased. The attack makes a red and black model appear to engulf the target, and then a transparent flash lights the target INSIDE that model. (I experimented and found that I could do that with alpha) It is totally Sa-WEET! Pics would come, but I'm not on my laptop as time of writing. Check back soon for images of this great attack! (It took me a while to perfect it, but now I am 100% satisfied and hopefully you will be too!)

Nice Lucifer model, though you could try making the wings be sort of torn apart, or something of the sort (To show that he's damned to hell, or whatever :P (Sorry, mods.) ). And you could make him carry a machete.

From what you're showing us here, it certainly does look like a meatball.  Explosions aren't generally (in my experience anyway) quite so dark or brown.  Even if whatever is exploding is generally dark, the explosion disperses it into the air.  Take a bag of charcoal, blow it up, and it'll look medium to light gray, not so much black or dark gray.  It probably won't be so uniformly round, either.  Or is it supposed to be less of an explosion and more of a swirling mass of unholiness?  I guess maybe it's just hard to tell from stills and will make much more sense when we see it in action.  It might look better (and less meatball-esque) if it were more translucent.

It's not an explosion. It's a blast of energy. Armageddon is a powerful dark energy spell! I finished the lucifer model, and I'll try to post a new pic soon...

I still think it might look better if either you made the whole thing a little more see-through or just put some totally see-through patches on it.  For example, instead of having it be brownish-red and black blotches, you could have brownish-red, black, and see-through blotches.  That might make it look less like an object (or meatball) and more like an energy... um... thingy.

Let's try it this way: The armageddon spell creates a THICK, swirling blast of pure, dark energy which engulfs the foes. Happy?
