It's a little difficult to explain. You have to add UVW unwrap to the object. then under the modifier tab, click "uvw unwrap" so it turns yellow. then select each face then scroll down the modifier tab and click "planar map" then scroll back up click edit and place the faces where you want on the texture. (make sure you apply the texture before you do anything else.

Sometimes it is better to work with another choice than "planar map", because some vertexes get very worth with special choices. but that delivers in every case. Maybe it is good to detach some parts, to unwrap them  and you again attach it to one model after it.  After unwrap, set an extra modifier "edit mesh" on one part and then attach the other parts.
Very often it is easier to do so. But it is different in every case. So you have to try out. There is a "render to texture" featur under "render" in 3ds max 5 and 6. this is a "automatic" unwrapper. In 3ds max 6 you can work with the unwrapper seperate to texture render in 5 you must do both as I remember.
Than you get an uvw for the model. Save the uvw in an extern file an reload(in 5) or simply delete the automatic uvw modifier(in 6). Then do an "uvw unwrap" modifier on the model(selecteing all vertexes) and load the saved uvw.
This "Automatic Unwrap" is not very good(you have to move, attach and sclae also a little bit), but sometimes it helps to keep time for more important stuff). But as I said before: try out and find the best solution.

I've tryed to work on it after Strikershot reply, but i lost myserlf in the 3ds.
I think they translate with different word "planar map" in the 3ds italian version.
I'll try to use Speedator instruction now...
I hope to find a way ^___^
Thx

I think there is ann english version in the translated ones, too.
Look under GUI-Options.

The tutorial is good exept one MAJOR factor. When they unwrap her front side, it doesn't flatten her foot mesh out. so texturing it would be very hard if you want it to be a complex texture.

TTo do so is simple an gut for such comic-style, because you have no glow not shadows noch rela details in the texture. But it is good to show the basics in unwrapping.
You must find out how many single parts you need to get no problem with deformed meshes, as Striker said
