Newbie Questions. Hints and Help needed
« on: 12 October 2008, 14:06:33 »
Guys,
I discoverd this game yesterday through Maximum PC magazine. It looks and feels great !

However I am having such a hard time at it. I usually play Tech because it is stuff I can understand more easily.
However I can rarely get through the 2nd attack from the CPU ! I am having a hard time balancing building resources and producing fighting units.
Recently I ran out of fighters and I had to watch 1 (!) archer take down my last building. How Humiliating !  :-[

Is there an "easy" setting? lol.
Really, any hints for Newbies ?

Thanks.

Somebody put together a "how to play" guide that you might find useful.

There are also some tutorials. You will need 3.2 for that (check announcements), and as I know, Omega has made several more.

Ok I got it and read it. Thanks

But it is still TOO tough. I produce about 30 units in the time that the CPU produces 60 (!) units !  :(

I admit this game is kind of hard to get used to.  When you start Glest, try "Scenario" instead of "New Game" and you can try one like "Easy Day" or "Magic Practice".  Those are the two easiest ones, so they should help you get started.  Also, make sure you build plenty of workers.

Ah, don't use that link, it is handy, but very old. I have a new one on the glest board. (General Discussion)
It is in HTML format (which can be opened by all web browsers, though alignment and stuff is only perfect in IE. Firefox and stuff may have pictures overlapping text.

Once you install the beta, here is the link for 'better' tutorials. They explain the advanced features of the factions with a humorous twist!
http://http://www.glest.org/files/contrib/scenarios/tutorials/
Hope you become a good glest player because it really is a great game! 8)

If you really just want to beat a computer 1v1, here's what you do.
To start off, send one worker to build a Blacksmith and another to build a Barracks, and the last worker to mine gold. Set your Swordsmen and Archer into a position where you know the enemy will attack you. Make 4 more workers at the castle. Make the first one that comes out mine gold until you have 100, and another one mine stone (until you have 500, this is just in case you need to build more Castles/your Barracks/Blacksmith gets destroyed), another one mine wood, and the last one mine gold. When you get 100 with the first one that comes out, build a Farm. Keep all animals in the farm (take the animals and right click on the farm so they go into the middle, if they can). It's your choice whether you want pigs or cows. Cows = save 5 gold compared to 2 pigs. Pigs = if one dies, you have another one for insurance still. Okay, after your Barracks is done, send that worker to mine gold, and when you can, make 3-5 more workers mining gold. When your Blacksmith is done, send that dude to mine wood, and make 1 more worker to mine wood. If you are fast like I am (no conceitedness, I can't even beat one computer ultra and most veterans can beat 3, but I started like 2 months ago), then this will be before the first attack, vs. Magic or Tech. If you are fighting Tech, then you should have about 5 Guards, the 2 Swordsmen, and the Archer when they attack. If you are fighting Magic, you should have 2 Guards, and another one that finishes before the attack is over, but that's all you need to own the Daemons' asses. When you can, making sure that you're ALWAYS making at least 1 Guard, upgrade units' Shield and Melee Attacks, and later Shield (2). This will increase EVERY GUARDS' defensive and offensive power, so it's well worth it. When you have at least 10 Guards, stage you first attack against the enemy. It has a chance of failing, but you can probably do enough damage to ensure that they don't have any flying units when you next attack. Keep making Guards, and when you have about 15, attack again, and you should win. They should not have any flying units if you do it like I do, but if you think you took too long, make some Archers. This is one way to easily defeat any non-ultra enemy on 1v1.

1) Begin a "New Game" and set all factions to 1 (same team). Now you are able to view how the computer factions progress and how/where they send scouting units.

2) Use a large map - you'll have more time for building-upgrades and unit production.

3) Start a game with four factions, set one of the computer units as an ally and set the other two factions as enemies to all - so the four factions will be set thusly:

A> You and Ally team 1/1.

B> Third faction set as 3.

c> Fourth faction set as 4.

You now have an ally and can more easily compete with the opposing factions.

4) Resource (gold/wood/ore) gathering and distance to the resource bank (castle guild tepee).

Q - How efficient are the gathering units and are they traveling a long distance between the two points? Are the gathering units "dancing" IE: walking into each other between the harvesting point and the resource dump and thus forcing a walking-path recalculation which in turn reduces unit efficiency ?

A - Dancing units can reduce resource gathering by a very large amount. Make sure units are traveling the shortest possible distance(s) between the two points. Sometimes its wise to build a new storage building positioned closer to a resource point - this will reduce pathing time(s) between gathering area and storage site.

Really? I have not seen those too.. All i have are the medium to insane scenarios..
Also I tried what Trappin said. It was the first battle i ever won.

To learn how to play, I recommend checking out the Glest Guide.

Also, try the tutorials that are now in the newest version, and check the glest guide's mod download center to find two more tutorials made by me (in the scenarios section of the download page, WAY down).
The glest guide is found at http://glest.110mb.com/ and YOU CANNOT USE INTERNET EXPLORER ON THE SITE!!! Download Firefox, Google Chrome, or Safari (or anything else, but these are the recommened).

You will not find the scenarios mentioned because they were removed when tutorials were introduced.

Finally, please refrain from posting in very old topics like this. Let them die in peace.

RIP! :'(

Welcome to the board BTW! ;D

I've been thinking for a while that it would be nice to have a "cpu easy" that harvested ultra slow (just like cpu ultra is 3x faster).

Firstly, lets let this forum die. GAE has considered adding this, and if I remember correctly, one of the programmers had already done it, though didn't add it into GAE.

Correction notice: you stated ultra being 3x faster. It's actually 1.5x faster. The easy that I described above was only 0.5x the normal speed (half as fast). Very poor method of creating difficulty levels, but it'll suffice until hardcore AI programing could be done many years away...

Pumpkinhead your observation on the easy mode - NOT being easy - is 100% right on!!

Easy should be just that.... EASY!!!   lots of people crossing over and discovering great games on linux like Glest here - lets NOT chase them away!

As for Omega stating this forum should "Die" because HE has no trouble is wrong.  Maybe the game is beyond the scope of a new player can handle, I suggest that Omega sticks to the more advanced forum users topics, and leave the Nebie/strategy helping to others who really undestand what it's like to enjoy a new game without total frustration.

BTW: Cudos to Bisurge, Trappin and Flame#### for actually taking to time to actually help - not just link BS

Hah hah. Worry not, I'm not trying to descriminate new players. I'm here to help. Check out the tutorials in glest for VERY basic help, or for better IN-GAME help with MY tutorials, check out the glest guide's mod download center. Scroll down to the scenario section, and look for the advanced tutorials. Don't let their name fool you. They are a new player's best friend.

As for the reason I said to let this forum die, people do not like resurecting OLD topics. Please see my post here.

Finally, just to clear things up, glest does not have an easy mode, though GAE may adopt one, since it was already coded a long time ago, just the oposite of the ultra. Normal glest only has normal and ultra difficultys, and I agree, for a new player, they can be a woozy at first. It took my about 3 or 4 battles to get the hang of it. Try to do tutorials first, to learn how to play, and THEN adopt trial and error (which is the most proven way!).
