glest game speed
« on: 9 November 2008, 01:27:05 »
Glest is awesome :)

It looks like I may have ran into a problem with Glest 3.1.2 (shared library version 0.4.0 ) Built Mar 5 2008 on GNU / Linux.

It occasionally seems to speed up to an incredibly fast speed all by itself, the sound freezes up and the game becomes uncontrollable.

Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Please let me know what kind of debugging info I can provide.

Thanks!

I do remember this happening to other people but I can't find the thread on it, maybe someone else will know. Also welcome to the forum.

I also had these problems a long time ago, but for me they are fixed now. Since 3.1.2 I had no more trouble with these speedup problems.
BUT: No error was found this time, so probabaly its still a bug in the game.

When I had this error it looks like a problem with the soundsystem to me which causes the uncontrolled speedup.
It happened very often in multiplayer games and made them crash.

HINT:
When you search in the forum you better use google/or something else to search for older posts. The forum had a bad crash some month ago and the search index is corrupt now. :(

to search for norsemen in google for example type:

There is a DebugMode option in glestadv.ini

Thanks for the suggestion :)

On Linux apparently the file is $HOME/.glest/glest.ini

I edited the file and set DebugMode=1

After starting the game there was some debugging info superimposed on the left.

Unfortunately after some time the game locked up hard and I had to reboot.

Unfortunately, I did not have time to document the debugging info on the screen.

There might be a saved log of debugging info.

Cool, thanks, I will look around.

In the meantime I played the game for about an hour, maybe longer, and built up a huge army, with debugging still on. The game did not crash and it did not speed up to insane speed either.

My frame count was 255835.

Debug info with game paused a few minutes before ending the game:

MouseXY: 142,613

PosObjWord: 47,57

Render FPS: 172

Update FPS: 40

GameCamera post: 36.95, 20.00, 46.25

Time: 17.00

Triangle count: 16006

Vertex count: 21654

Frame count: 255835

Player 0 res: 59 0 48675 12340 65880

Player 1 res: 0 176 83 6 166

A few days ago the game sped up to insane speed playing this map ( Island Siege - Magic vs Tech ) with the same settings as today.

I was trying to replicate the circumstances under which it went crazy last time.

Thanks everyone :)

hailstone:

I found the log file in $HOME/.glest/glest.log but sadly it has been overwritten several times since the insane speed up a few days ago and the hard lockup a few hours ago.

I will post my log file the next time I run into a problem.

In the meantime, the contents of my current $HOME/.glest/glest.log ( from the latest clean run ) are:

Hey guys :(

The sound froze up and there was a very loud buzzing sound, the game sped up to insane speed and after hitting num lock, the num lock became stuck, caps lock wouldn't turn on, the FPS counters inside the game went to 0 and the FPS counter in the main menu was also 0 after hitting escape and ending the game.

Debug info with game paused shortly after it happened:

MouseXY: 410,593

That's high render frames... My laptop usually goes at 10-25 FPS...

In-game I've seen it as high as 206 render FPS.

In the main menu I usually get 210 - 255 FPS.

Update FPS is steady at 40 except when the game goes crazy and both render and update FPS drop to 0 and the game gets incredibly fast.

The same problem as the following?

viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1642

You can confirm that by changing the time (to past) while Glest is working with windowed mode.
