Future / roadmap for Glest
« on: 16 November 2008, 18:31:13 »
Hi all,

As I'm completely new to Glest I don't know if this has been asked before - I've looked around I cannot seem to find anything about what the future holds for Glest. I find it to be a very impressive and professional made game - but it could be even better, so I sat down and wrote down my thoughts on what I believe would make the difference;

InGame
- Pause (Multiplayer should only be x times of max x seconds )
- Save game
- Settings

Game
- Change resolution ?
- Replay Game (upload to your online profile ? for others to see/analyze)
- Campaigns / Story mode
- Make more of the xml options changeable from the game itself ?
- Bigger maps ?
- More upgrades per unit / Buildings (eg. upgrade your castle, lumber-mill to get wood quicker etc)
- Download new maps from the game (screenshot, description, download)
- Download new mods from the game - same as above.

Multiplayer
- Official Online Rankings
- In-game online lobby feature (if you just want to play another human)
- Dedicated servers would also keep track of score / update the leader board etc

Web
- Newsletter
- Merchandise shop ?
- A donate button ? I'd be happy to donate both time and money to this project.
- Statistics on the game (players, downloads etc.)

Those are just some of the ideas that flew though my mind, so any feedback is appreciated. I, of course, have a lot more thought behind each of the above points so if there is any interest I'll gladly fill more information in.

Best regards,
Lasse

Hi, Welcome to Glest !

You should have a look at the GAE-Projekt (Glest-Advanced-Engine). It can easily found on the Forums:
http://http://glest.org/glest_board/viewforum.php?f=15

For Example Save-Game is already done by GAE.
Mods and Maps can be downloaded here at the forum. The Mods often have own Webpages.
You could have a look at Glest on ModDb, too:
http://http://www.moddb.com/games/glest/mods

An official Database would be much better, I agree.
Have you searched this site, too ?!: http://http://glest.org/en/downloads.php

You can make maps by yourself using the Map-editor which can be found trought the link above, too.
But we had very bad expirience with maps larger than 256x256, the game begins to stutter !
BTW: Maps height and size have to be a power of 2.
More Upgrades and Units ? You could even make anyone if you want ^^
Glest is very easily to mod ! That's what I love on it !!!

Have fun ! ^^

Hi,

Save game is already done in GAE. Settings... There are options in the base game too, but you can achieve greater depths with the configurator, and with the .ini-s.

Change resolution? It's already done (in the settings.)
Replay game: not heard about it (as being done)
Campaigns: Look for the Lua scripts.
What do you mean by that?
You can make bigger maps whenever you want (up to 1024*1024)
It depends on the modders (and on the Glest Team, of course)
Maps&Mods: You can download them from the forum: check below.

Well, these all just the music of the future.

There are merchandise and donate, I will try to find the topic about it.

I will commit suicide, because I couldn't find it :O

No, Glest needs you, Kukac! :o

Having a Glest coffee mug or something would be pretty cool, though.

Or a T-Shirt. There is plenty of places that will make T-Shirts, they charge you a certain price, and you can make profit from them, or just have a really cheap, no profit aT! As for donations, maybe they should, after all, most free games and stuff have ones, which could certainly inspire faster developement. (as long as they wouldn't get too gready and want to start charging to play glest! :O )
