hint & request [Version Number on Startup]
« on: 2 December 2008, 18:21:35 »
It might be that I posted it anywhere here on the forums before, but I still see this Text under the Logo when starting GAE:
"Advanced Engine v.0.2.8b"

This schouldn't be there as a text, it should be in the logo.tga file !
Why ? Here a simple example:

I create a mod/a game for Glest and want's to use GAE. I created a other Logo for my game.
-> Whooops, 13K advanced engine =
1) It looks like the game isn't based on Glest
2) This text is much to big and is really annoying me
3) This text have nothing to do with my game!
... And much more good reasons !

Please remove this text in further GAE versions, it should be implanted into the Logo.tga file !

I want this text :)
Full releases might get rid of this, but currently its a big help when you are testing!
For me GAE still is a development version, not meant for productive work.
Try Megaglest! Improved Engine / New factions / New tilesets / New maps / New scenarios

Is there not a file you can edit to change the very first Logo?  If so, problem solved.  Otherwise, there should be one!

@ titi: Yes, but what is the problem to add this text into the Logo ?

@ modman: No, this text is in the binarys, but it would be much better when this text is in the logo-file !
   Please read the topic again.

The main issue is valid, but the proposed solutions are short-sighted.  What Glest and GAE need is the ability to be completely "skinnable".  That is, a "mod" should be able to launch the engine is a manner so that every button, menu, logo, background scene, music, etc, is modified making it look like an entirely different game.  I think it should be limited only in that the engine's "about" should never be removable or modifiable (so that one doesn't attempt to masquerade as "I wrote this whole engine").  This is, however, a large undertaking and will require integrating a professional widget library and a lot of coding to facilitate.

In a shorter scope, if somebody wants to make a "Glest Advanced Engine" logo, please feel free to do so and post it or email it to me! :)  Until then, we'll print the text "Advanced" below the logo before printing the version.

Yes of course that is true and we should prevent this.

I'll create one and post it here

Here is the logo.
An elementary problem is that the Logo shouldn't be scaled. It should just be centered!

Or a much better idea:
Write the Text into the menu.xml

w00t! :)  I'm going to edit out the version in the image and put that as text still, but this will work nicely, thanks!!  I'll save the file as gae_logo.tga or something so it doesn't interfere with a side-by-side install of the original Glest engine, and I'll have to look at the menu.xml some more and see if I need to do anything different there.

how about this:
gae_logo.rar[/attachment:7868pw4p]
gae_logo.jpg[/attachment:7868pw4p]
of course you'll have change the scale of the image 512x512

damn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
mictes,
I hope you wont be offended if I went with gameboy's design :)

gameboy, can you do it with a black background?  I rather like it.  As long as there are no other objections from anybody (anybody on the Glest team, etc.) I rather like it :)  Also, the size is fine, you can make it bigger if you want, it's going to scale automatically based upon your resolution anyway (I like that feature of the 3d engine in Glest).

Wouldn't it be better to have an alpha background? And save as png to reduce size and allow alpha. It can be converted to the bmp based tga later (which is just huge in file size).

No, I want a background that's in front of the ground so we aren't behind it. That way, we can push the ground in front and back the alpha to the beta. k?

Glest (and GAE) can't use pngs.

Btw, Gameboy, why did you put black frost-like stuff on it? And you might want to make the added text be anti-aliased. It looks a bit jagged.

Ok, that is positive critism. But this here is something I totally don't understand:

Sorry, I didn't read well...

Mictes, he even quoted the quote, where Omega said, he would save the picture as png to allow alpha.
