There are good reasons for having a peer-to-peer topology (aoe used it) but it does have that problem with the router. If we can do something like a relay server it might work. ie user1 <-> (Internet) <-> user2 (relay) <-> user3 . so for each network there would need to be a relay server essentially acting as a single peer.

Good point.  Although the game currently works as as a relay system, it is possible for two clients to both be able to talk to the server but not be able to talk to each other, so that relay mechanism should be left intact on the server in case of that situation!
