This isn't off topic cause it concerns the names of the faction, undeads. I don't think you should use latin for everything, but it sure helps when you need a cool name and you're out of ideas. Just remember Necro is death and Polis is city, oh, and read the bible, I forget some of it, but there's lots of latin, and the original untranslated psalms are often in latin.

Of course, feel free to have a unit named zombie! :-}

Not to nitpick or anything (okay, that's a lie) but it's Greek, not Latin.  Also, the psalms were written mostly by King David in ancient Hebrew.  I think parts of the New Testament were originally written in Greek and/or Latin, though.

Latin: dead - mortuus (where we get the words "mortal" and "mortuary"), city - urbis (think "urban"), wizard - magus (hence "mage", "magician", "magical", et cetera [also Latin])

I'm not saying that using Greek would be bad or anything... just get it right. lol

Yes but I was kind of gearing it towards Magitech, and pretty much the only things that fit are things from the midieval time period, and that also includes LOTR factions (dwarves, elves ect.).

I suppose I could include one or two Egyption undead units, but only if I get a good suggestion.

Let's see... Egyptians used a lot of chariots and they mummified their important dead people, so there are two unit possibilities for you there: Mummy and (Undead) Charioteer.  Other things significant to ancient Egypt are snakes and (especially since we're dealing with death) jackals, vultures, and scarab beetles.  Snakes were bad news because if you get bitten by a cobra and you don't have any anti-venom (which they didn't), basically all you can do is put your head between your legs and kiss your butt goodbye.  Jackals and vultures are both scavengers, so they're associated with death.  Anubis (god of the dead) had the head of a jackal and the pharaoh's crown had a vulture on it (as well as a snake), so that should give you an idea of how important these animals were to ancient Egypt.  The Egyptians in "Age of Mythology" have a pretty awesome giant scarab and who can forget the flesh-eating beetles in "The Mummy"?

Jesus spoke Aramaic and Hebrew! <--Enough off topic though

Does anyone know a good English to Latin translation site?  Google Translate has Latvian, but not latin. >:[z]

I was playing this game, Heros of the Annihilated, and it has an Undeads faction; does anyone has anything against pickpocketing a few ideas from that?
(PS I HATE doing that, but I would like a little feedback besides Egyptians)

I think I'm going to include a few more units, and get rid of some others.  The new suggestions are:
  • revenant
  • skeleton
  • zombie
  • ghoul
  • ghost
  • wraith
  • spectre
  • lich
  • ghast
  • mummy
  • vampire

Please tell me which ones you like and which ones you don't!

Does anyone know a good English to Latin translation site?
It'll probably be kinda hard to find a good one.  It's hard for a machine to translate a language as complicated as Latin.  There are so many different forms for each word.  Nouns have forms depending on singular, plural, subject, direct object, indirect object, possessive, and probably a bunch of others I'm forgetting, while verbs vary depending on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd person perspective as well as plurality/singularity and at least five different tenses (present, past imperfect, past perfect, future, future perfect...), so just looking up individual words and trying to string them together to form anything that makes sense is a little hard.  You might be able to do well enough to suit your purposes with a little help.  It's been a few years since I've touched Latin, so it's a little rusty (okay, a lot), but I guess I can TRY to lend a hand...

Here's one site I found, but it's not particularly user-friendly.

I'd avoid doing any direct ripoffs if I were you, but it wouldn't hurt to get a little inspiration...

Well, most RTS undead factions are big groups of undead, being commanded by more powerful undead.  Instead, it could be made up of (option 1) powerful magic-users and lots of undead underlings, or the opposite (option 2), powerful undead (liches and whatnot) with a lot of living slave/cultist units, or (option 3) a mix of the previous two but with some demonic monsters thrown in for good measure.

Examples:
1) Zombies, skeletons, undead horseman, other miscellaneous no-life low-lifes, necromancers, warlocks
2) Slave workers, cultist soldiers, death knights, specters, liches
3) Cultist (worker), mad swordsman (strong melee but weak defense), mad javelineer (short range but strong), possessed swordsman (upgrade of mad swordsman), death knight / undead charioteer, balrog, succubus, warlock

Option 3 is definitely my favorite, by the way.  Oh, and skeletal units should be very resistant to piercing attacks.

I believe it's "specres".  It's pronounced the same though.

Thank you for your feedback.  I never thought of warlocks; I'll have to include that.
About translation: would it actually enhance the game, or would it just be confusing to most people?

I think that's an international difference, like "center" vs. "centre", so either should be fine.

I think it would be a lot more trouble than it's worth, to be quite honest.

dude i think that necromancers would be like battlemages and there could be like a tomb building so someone doesn't have to summon them;in fact a person could be modeled standing by the tomb and summoning them instead of the necromancer

After finally looking at the list of unit names, I just released that a lot of them are just names for the same or similar things.

Revenant, ghost, wraith, spectre, lich, and ghast are all just ghosts (almost directly off of FF).

well i think that wraiths are more like evil souls that are cloaked by a ragged black cloth and they carry a rather large scythe and they also suck the souls out of people and use them to live

Yes, technically they are all ghosts, but hat do you think Undeads is? ::)  Besides, they have different functions in the faction; some are melee and some are mage-like and some summon other units.

Me too. Be sure to learn how to model and try to finish DM before getting in with this though (please).

Yes, that's what I'm doing.  I've tried to restrain myself from initiating discussions on this topic.  All I need for Dark Magic is models, and I can consider it done (I've decided that sounds can come in an expansion later.  This is because, as with most RTS games, people generally shut off their sound after a while because of its repetitiveness).
