No no no no no... here's how to do it a much easier way!
Here's an example of what your action editor window might look like:
In your action editor window, click on that double arrow button (shown here circled in red) and then "ADD NEW". Then you can make your animation in that new action. When you're done with that animation, "ADD NEW" again, and put your new animation in that action. This lets you keep each animation separate allowing you to organize them all much easier, as well as making switching between them easier. When you export, just make sure you have the right action selected in your action editor window and the right start and end frames.
Edit: And by the way, you generally want to set the start frame to 1 and the end frame to
one frame before the end of the animation because the start and end frames are going to be the same and you don't want it to be repeated each time. So for example, if your animation has four frames, then you want to start with 1 and end with 3. The one exception to this is the death animation, because that only plays once, so you want to include all the frames when you export.
