Sorry I've been away a bit guys... I've been having some major computer troubles recently and still haven't fixed it. Odd, isn't it? Microsoft releases Windows 7 and on the same day my Vista starts acting up. All the more reason for me to ask for Windows 7 for christmas. So, if any of you can figure our what's wrong, you'll save me the trouble of figgin' re-installing vista (something I'm afraid to do. I have bad past experiences with reinstalling OSes). So I notice a few things off the bat: all 3rd party programs work 100% fine, as does all hardware. Drivers work fine, but the ATI Catalyst Control Center doesn't, though the driver works (whew, otherwise I'd be looking at a 1024x768 generic screen). Sound doesn't work at all. Hovering over the volume in the tool panel says that the audio service is not running. Many windows functions give me the error that not enough storage is available to complete the operation. Microsoft says this error is because the registry's size has been exceeded, which I admit would make sense for most of my troubles, but the only help I can find is for older OS's, namely pre windows 2000.
I'm not running many programs at all. In fact, at the time, just the bare minimum, and I am using 20% of my 2 GB of real RAM, and 15% of my 7 GB of virtual RAM. I noticed that the windows performance index is missing from the system screen, though I was able to access it direct. Tried increasing the size of the paging file to the max, without success. Just googling for help now... I have to DJ a junior dance at my school on the friday before halloween (THIS FRIDAY!!!) so this just won't do! Worst case scenario I can copy all my music onto the schools (sucky) computers and install a program to play them (fortunately I have a local login there). However, that would kinda suck, and would be slow to move files, since I have some 10 GB of music on my laptop, so using three DVD's seems like a waste, and I have no external HD.
If I end up having to reinstall vista, how should I do it? Also, I want to backup ALL of my files EXACTLY as they were, but that seems so tedious to do on DVDs, and I don't have any dual layer to burn (and even then I'd need a lot). My dad has an old computer we don't use anymore that has a big enough HDD installed to hold all my files. Is there any way to move my files to another HDD?
Thanks. I will definately be getting Windows 7, and will definately be using a clean install. I mean, I've had more computer troubles this year than ever before. Of course, while vista is pretty bad right now, I still stand by windows. 7 sounds nice, and linux definately has its downtimes. Just look at glest.110mb.com or glest.codemonger.org. They are linux hosted and have a kinda nasty downtime...
