According to Genesis, from dirt we come, and back to dirt we return. (something like that...)

So I would much rather say I came from an ape-like ancestor than some dirt.

Anyways, evolution says we came from a ape-like creature; then it split, with humans going one way and apes the other.  So saying we came from monkeys is downright lying.  It's actually a strawman argument.  It would be like saying your brother is your dad.

Sorry to interject, but saying that we didn't come from dirt is only marginally different than saying we did come from some form of early organic matter - which came from other elements - many of the same that are in "common" dirt or soil.

Yes, Knowing was a bizarre movie. It's like it wanted to be horror with a well-good-for-them ending. Meh, coulda been worse or better.

The ape evolved from another creature which was slightly less sophisticated which itself evolved from a another creature and so on all the way down to simple chemical life. It is my BELIEF that this is literally true.

As with any prehistoric event, the most we can do is gather evidence of what we think happened, and make an educated guess.  Personally, I don't know where I came from, nor do I particularly care.

Anybody here read "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins? It was a very interesting read.

People should be able to talk about what ever they want to in the off topic section. The fact that this thread often has multiple conversations going on just highlights the need for a proper Off Topic section. Most forums have one because it helps to foster community by allowing people to talk about stuff other than the 'main' topic of the forum.

The theory of evolution as I understand it:
A solar ray hits one of the sperm inside a male animal/Human and scrambles the genetic code, and then when he impregnates a female that little sperm gets to the egg first, and that female has some offspring that are different from the rest of it's species.
Now I really don't see how scrambling the genetic code would bring about any improvements.

You people don't seem to get how f*cking large the Human Genome is, if you put it in word/numbers, it would be at least 5000 times as long as the current distance between the moon and the earth. Now let's take the Glest source-code which is microscopic compared to the Human genome, so let's say you scrambled the Glest source-code. You really think it would be bug free, and have improvements! I think it wouldn't even run!

This is a blatant and rather lame straw man argument. The human Genome is not equal to source code. Also radition does not "scramble" the DNA, it may only affect one pair in the whole sequence.

If the sequence of coincidental events which lead to human conciuosness had not happened we would not be here debating the fact that it is so unlikely that they happened. (there is a name for this argument which i forget atm )

Got news for ya: The sun was 75 percent as warm as it is now not that long ago, but definitely not millions of years ago, when you people say evolution was occuring the Earth was a block of ice! I suggest you watch The Mysterious Islands before you continue this arguement.
The Mysterious Islands is about a group of people who go to the Galapagos Islands which is where Darwin got his answers about evolution, the problem is he got the wrong conclusion, and that's what the movie's about, people go to the Galapagos Islands and look at how Darwin got his answers.
