Game freezes after some time 5-15 minutes (ubuntu linux)

Hello there, I just installed Glest on my laptop with Ubuntu hardy on it and found the game quite enjoyable, that is until it froze on me and forced me to shut down my system by using the power button (soft shutdown, not hard luckily) to get it to turn off. I could not access anything, not the terminal, nor could I get out of the program.

When it crashes, my screen blinks once, (goes to full black, as if it was changing the resolution) then comes back up with half the screen being black, half of it the image that was last on it when the game froze. When I hit the power button, the shutdown/startup splash comes on, only it occupies the top half of the screen that was once black, and is copied over four times, and all four are rather "line-y", I think the display is fragmented into four sections like such:

Where the numbers represent very small  lines of the screen. about 3 pixels in height. I cannot get a screenshot of this or else I would, if there is anything else I can post that would be of help, please just ask.

Does restarting the computer make it normal?

Also what kind of monitor, graphics card and graphics drivers do you have?

This hapens to me sometimes, but when i power it down and back up, it works fine...

Again, whats your video card?
Ati or nvidia?

Ati has known problems in Linux, but these are problems of the ati drivers and not problems of the glest game itself!
But if you crash after 10-15 minutes which can only be fixed by a hard restart it's probably a temperature problem in your computer.
I also have one computer ( nvidia geforce 6600 GT ) which has big problems with glest. But if you run the computer with a open case ( and its not hot in the summer) everything works fine. ( Do you probabaly have similar problems with the game nexuiz ? )

We have seen this kind of thing also in Ubuntu. It may have to do with your screen saver trying to kick-in (or some other background process interrupting Glest). Also I noticed that if I run google earth and leave it sitting in the background.. when I load Glest it goes to an FPS of 0 and I have to kill the process. Also if you have dual monitor and have it configured as one big monitor (ie twinview) then glest (and all other opengl) games get confused and try to re-center the game improperly and move the game partially off the screen.

We have 6 ubuntu computer here( different versions 6.06/8.04/810 and none of them has these problems ...
But all  have nvidia cards.
I still think its a driver problem what gfx cards do you have?

We have 6 Ubuntu's here as well (all running 8.10)... using a mix of both NVidia and ATI.

and there are these problems with nvidia cards too?
I don't have any of these problems. I can run google earth savageXR and glest at the same time without any trouble.
