Are animals possible?

is it somehow possible to make an neutral faction like wolves and birds?

Well, there is a weird way of manipulating this, you can make a faction with animals but make all of the animals sight and attack 1 then make it so that they do not start with a base, only a set number of units and presto. It's not that advanced an they will intentionally attack you but it's better than nothing.

What you can do is not to add an attack command to the animals, that way they will not attack you, the only problem is that your units will attack them.

Deleting the attack command might prevent them from attacking but it will not prevent them from coming  into your base attempting to attack (even though they can not)

This is not correct, units that don't have attack commands, such as cows or pigs, just run when they see a unit that can attack..

That should be automatic. If it isn't, trysetting the sight and attack to 1 and try that out.
