How to install G3D Blender exporter?
« on: 27 February 2009, 08:56:32 »
How can I install the exporter?
I downloaded it, but it is a Python Archive, and nothing happens when I click on it.
I made a really cool model, but I can't export it back....

I would advise you to download my Blender directory which has the plugin already installed. (For Windows)

what OS are you using?

If its Windows then you need to follow these steps:

1 Download the Glexemel files (which are needed to convert your models) and extract the archive.
http://www.glest.org/files/contrib/tools/glexemel_win32_0.1a.zip

2 Download the newest version of the blender export script.
http://www.titusgames.de/blender/g3d_xml_exporter_v1.0.zip

3 Copy the export script and all files from the glexemel_win32_0.1\bin folder that you just downloaded into C:\program files\blender foundation\blender\.blender\scripts

4 Fire up Blender and go to File>Export>G3d XML Exporter

Hope this helps  ;)

Its doesnt work because there are no folders inside C:\Arquivos de programas\Blender Foundation\Blender, just lots of .dll files and a few others.... :(

I would suggest that you download modmans blender directory. Copy the .blender/scripts folder to your own blender folder and follow the steps.

Overwrite any files since modman has the old version of the export script which does not support direct G3d export.

EDIT:
I made a new all-in-one package for newbies. This combines the export script with the Glexemel files and strips out 10mb(!) of unnecessary Qt librarys in the glexemel package.

You can get it here. http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=1f0aae8070545e51d2db6fb9a8902bda

Note that some OS's like Vista will have the .blender directory under something like C:/Users/Your Name/AppData/roaming/blender foundation/blender

IE:  C:/Users/Owner/AppData/roaming/blender foundation/blender

Hmm, thats strange. I've got 2 different folders:

C:/Users/Your Name/AppData/roaming/blender foundation/blender/.blender

and

C:\program files\blender foundation\blender\.blender

Blender only seems to use the latter one though.

I realized something. If you set the security for the blender folder (in program files, the one titled 'Blender Foundation') you can have it properly saved with the .blend directory in the right place. Its something to do with Vista's crappy security.

OT: Does anyone know a way to (almost) completely change or turn off Vista's security system? I have other methods...

Bah, haven't you seen my windows 7 cartoon at the start of the off topic thread?

Though you are right, windows 7 would still not be worth buying just for an upgrade (not even a real new OS)

Basically, all it's doing is fixing all the crap Vista made.

I happen to like Vista, and except for file association annoying errors, I have no problems with it.  Then again, there are the bluescreens... >:(

Have a look at this ( especially the INSTALLATION part)
https://docs.megaglest.org/Exportscript

If glexemel (xml2g.ex) is working, the exportr should expot to g3d directly

Try Megaglest! Improved Engine / New factions / New tilesets / New maps / New scenarios

yeah, it is working now, but I got another problem.

When I export the model, it says "Warning, some faces have been ignored (not triangles), Error may occur with faces and indices linking..."
And then it says: 236 esported faces (492 real faces), and when I open the model on the .g3d viwer, some parts dont appear, the faces that where not exported, how can I fix that?

The quick answer is to go into edit mode press a(select all) then ctrl+t(convert to triangles). Then re-export your mesh.

You should definitely read Titi's wiki page about exporting its good for explaining the basics :)

The site doesnt open in my computer  :(, neither does mediafire (a shame, because I cannot download almost anything!), I'm gonna try what you say though.

EDIT:Yay! It works!!
Another question (lol, another one, I will have some more soon I guess...)
How do I put texture on the model, so when I open it on the .g3d viwer, it appers with the texture.

Thanks, both helped me a lot, but there is still one thing I can't figure out how to do it.I made the texture appear on blender perfectly, and edited the TGA file, but how can I make it appear on the g3d file ?I exported it after putting the texture on the model on blender, so it should work.

watch my video again, especially the part with material for the object in the end.
This material definition is needed, otherwise you have no textures in the export.

Yes I did, but when I try to open the g3d model, the error that the texture is not in the same folder than the model occours, even if the texture (tga file) is next to it.Edit: i think I got the error, when I open the G3d viewer, the problem says:"Can't open TGA file: C:/Documentis and Settings/(My name)/My Documents/c:/documents and settings/(my name - without capital letters)/my documents/tower.g3d"

I think, that the problem is that link, after the fisrt my documents, it says c:/ and then all the others, but without capital letters, if this is the error, how can I change that link?

When you export a file to xml, open it, and you'll see  something like

texture-name="C:/Documents and Settings/(My name)/My Documents/texture_name.tga"

You need to edit it to say:

texture-name="texture_name.tga"

Do this for every mesh (find and replace helps). Now convert to G3D as normal and you're done! It says this on the glest guide (http://glest.110mb.com)
