Network join causes FPS do *die*

Hello all,

I like the game but I can't have anyone join my computer or join anyone else's computer without the framerate dropping to about 2. I poked around and couldn't find a solution to this problem. The game runs fine otherwise.

Windows XP Professional (32-bit)
Intel Core 2 duo
Nvidia 7600 GT
Onboard NIC

what i heard is:

the game is checking and sending any messages, this prosses is a very fast one, and it keeps repeating...
