In linux, you either want to compile glest yourself (you have to for GAE), or download titi's binaries.

And yes, Glest is totally free.  It's licensed under the GNU General Public License, so you can do pretty much whatever you want with it.  It's even okay to use the source code to make your own game and sell it for profit as long as you abide by the GPL and give credit to The Glest Team.

If you wish to just update, then you want the official binary ( compiled on ubuntu 6.06 ) glest3.2.1_i386_linux_bin.tar.bz2(~5MB)
If you wish to compile glest for yourself (probably resulting in better performance) then you want the prepared source package for glest 3.2.1: glest-source-3.2.1.tar.bz2(~0.5MB)

Compiling the game is when you get the source code (c/c++) and use gcc to "build" the code into a binary (or executable file)

Glest is released as a linux binary, so why use wine?

To install it and run it under Wine, you don't have to know anything about terminal command-line stuff and it's the same process as it is under Windows, so if you've ever installed anything on Windows, you know exactly how to install something using Wine.  I prefer to use the Linux binary, though, because I haven't had very good experiences with Wine.  It really just comes down to personal style, I guess.

Sorry! It's just because wine doesn't always work, so someone with a different linux distro could find that glest doesn't work with the .exe

so I don't think he has Linux.
And for those using linux and want an easy way to setup the game, use this installer:

It includes my binary and you can install glest in your home directory if you execute it as normal user.
I think this is the best choice, because you can easily modify everything in your glest installation without
working with superuser rights. ( install mods and so on )
