Open glest.ini and change the line FogOfWar=1 to 0

Really? I'm quite certain there is no way in Glest that WORKS. GAE works though...

Wouldn't disabling fog of war at least cause the game to lag? It did when I had a unit with super high sight. I assumed that having to render everything was poor for performance... Or is your computer so much better than mine???

no, there is no performance problem.
Probably a unit with ultimate view runs into a bug in the glest engine and thats why it is slow.
But switching off fog of war doesn't effect( or only very very little ) the performance from what I now.

I switch forg of war of for:
- faction balancing test games
- map viewing ( when developing maps )

I think playing is much more fun with fog of war enabled, because you never know whats happeneing.
Try Megaglest! Improved Engine / New factions / New tilesets / New maps / New scenarios

I agree. It's way better to have Fog of War. It also makes it slightly harder, since you never know what to expect. (ok, thats not necessarily true, since I often play unit along the pathways so that I can see the foe coming).

The performance isn't affected you say? Maybe I'll try again. A while ago (back in the good ol' 3.1.2) I tried what was said above, but it didn't work, which is why I assumed...

I think that this is then direct evidence that Glest is rendering the whole map and units when it doesn't even display them.  Fixing this problem would allow for battles that are much larger since most units in the game you do not see.

Hmm, now that I think of it, turning off fog of war, COULD help prevent your allie from being slaughtered (because you can see the opponent coming, and thus you can head out to meet them) as well as you can see when the AI in an four way battle are being attack. For example, if I am playing a game of me and three other cpu's, all on their own team, I can't tell what's happening to them. Often times, they fight among each other too soon, and when I go to attack one, I return empty handed (bastard beat me to the punch!).

I'm going to test this right now...

... IT WORKS! Heh. I think the problem in the past was because windows vista didn't have proper security settings in the program files folder. I allowed  myself full access, and it quit using app data. Thats why. App data, curse you.

Unfortunately the AI is not influenced at all by fog of war...
