What about team coulor in the ring which displays the health of the unit, and the player colour in the unit itself, so you can see both.

That's what I suggested earlier, as well as outlines when the unit cannot be seen (ie: In a forest, behind a building, covered by another unit) and that the outlines could be manually turned on via a hotkey.

ah, but now lets talk a little more practical. How would we be able to manage to get to play the game with eight players???

The same way other games do. Haven't you played Age of Empires II or Civ 4? RTS usually support 4-16 players. I Think 8 is just right for glest. It would need some source modifications as well as map modifications, a new map editor (need one anyway!), and maybe some other misc stuff...

Ah, and do you know someone who actually can do that?

Daniel, Silnarm, and Hailstone all have the coding knowledge to do so. However, GAE is very large, so they're probably swamped... This is more of a feature request (to join the many).

I'd really like to see some AI improvements before we make more players available. :-\

Unless someone else is going to make 8 players happen, you can safely count on that. I'm interested in lifting the player count, but in no rush, I'll certainly be working on the AI before I spend time on this.

I'm interested in knowing if doubling the player count might, say, cut in half the frame rate of the game.  Because if so, it's not worth the time.

Well, we won't have any problems if we stop flopping around with dial-up and crappy graphics. ::)

Glest is a free game, so you cannot expect a normal user to purchase a new graphics card to play it.

No, your frame rate will be determined by your hardware and how many units are on the screen, adding more players is unlikely to make any difference to your frame rate (well, maybe some crazy battles might), its more to do with what's visible. The game logic is pretty tight now, and in 0.2.13 it will be tighter still, the 'cost' of updating all the extra units will be minimal.

I also have a slow one but I think glest should support more players, too. If Glest will support 8 (or even 16) players one still have the option to play with less players (One doesn't have to play with 8 ).

Yah, you can always play with less players.

I'm not saying I have a bad computer.

Although every year that passes, my computer is one year older.  It's probably about 30 in "computer years" (one human year equals 10 computer years). :)

I have an 8 year old computer. We keep it very well :P

The matter of frames doesn't matter by how many players allowed in the game, rather the game engine. And how many units are there in the game, of course. Even tough, more player builds units faster, don't forget, that's why they die usually faster. If you don't play on a 1024*1024 map...

one word to modmans "Glest is a free game, so you cannot expect a normal user to purchase a new graphics card to play it."

 >:( >:( >:(
I can't believe you said this! I really dream of free games which are so good that you have to buy new hardware to play them!

But beside of this, did any new problems showed up that I might have missed with more than 4 teams beside:
1. network traffic
2. color problems
?

Try Megaglest! Improved Engine / New factions / New tilesets / New maps / New scenarios

With soft-coders network code 4 human players are fine, It would be  fun for me and all my bros to join up against a couple CPU megas!
Couldn't you just add more colors?

;D ;D ;D

You have to remember that just because there is 8 available players doesn't mean you have to use them all. You can use eight for a CPU game, and go with much less for an online game if you wish. I've never seen eight people online at the same time anyway! :-\

As for colors, I ALWAYS loose track of who my units are in a big battle, yet I still push on, by simple drag selecting and numbering my unit groups (btw, we need to be able to select more than 16 units). In the fray, I can't even tell the colors sometimes (at least not for magic when all those spells are splashing around). Only small battles have apparent colors, but you can easily recognize your units anyway. IMO, I can always tell who my units are not from the colors, but from a distinct 'knowing' and the simple matter of the direction they're facing in.

The bottom line: Don't fret the colors.
