Volcanic Released
« on: 7 April 2009, 04:09:28 »
I felt a need to make a new topic, since I believe that this should start with a picture and a link. First of all, credits go to me, Titi, and Gameboy. Also, give 'ol modman the credits for the idea.

*I apologize deeply to Gameboy. I credited the wrong person. Give him thanks for the trees.

Ah, the double-negative strikes again I see.

The download link doesn't seem to be working...

I downloaded it OK, but it appears the trees are broken ?!?
They all look Ok in the G3D viewer, but in the game I get this:

And for some constructive criticism, I think surface 1 is to different from surfaces 2 & 3,  they don't 'splat' well, as can also been seen above.  Surfaces 1 & 2 also have a kind of 'carpet effect' going on... I think because there is no variety... there are multiple textures, but with the probabilities you have set in the xml, the first one is going to get used on almost every occasion, hence the nasty looking tiling. Spread those probabilities out a bit! :)

But a promising looking tileset, it's nice to see some different looking terrain in Glest, and it's very nice to see people making some different tilesets.  Keep up the good work!

THe trees??? I'm not sure what happened... SOmething might have got messed up in the uploading or downloading... I'll try to upload again.

As for the textures, I really could use a hand, as 2D images are not my strong point... I'll see if I can improve it, though doing so while keeping tileable isn't easy... How does titi do it?

I see what you mean about surface one. Any suggestions? I'll try to lower saturation a little to make it less intense and remove some of the coloring so that it doesn't stand out so much (though it IS the 'path' texture). (do you like the ash piles at least?)

I can't speak for anybody else, but if you use Gimp try the offset feature ( http://docs.gimp.org/2.6/en/gimp-layer-offset.html ), it's what I use. My method is to do the majority of the image without focusing too much on the edges. Then use the offset to 50% (the x/2 y/2 button is easy enough). What this will do is shift everything in the image 50% both ways. You'll notice the edges are now across the middle of the map in a + shape. Paint them.
I'll usually do several offsets, including at least one by 25%, just to make sure that there aren't any seams left anywhere (it's easy to accidentally create a new set of seams). Make sure to re-offset the reverse amount of what you've done if you specifically need the image lined up with your other textures (or there's something like a stone in the middle like in the forest tileset).

I used to have a pictorial tutorial to this effect (made when Max Payne - the first - came out), but I think you can figure it out.

Edit: And be sure to use the wrap around option, that's what makes the whole thing work.

Don't get me wrong man, I like what I see, especially the 'ash piles' and other 'eye candy' textures!
The problem is you only have one 'plain' texture for the surface, because the other ones are eye candy you've set the probabilities very low for them (a good idea) which means the one plain texture is left to do the bulk of the 'work'. The same small texture over and over again is unlikely to look natural. So you just need a couple of extra plain textures for the surface, and spread the probabilities out on the 'plain' ones.

From what I've seen of Titi's tilesets, he follows the general pattern set by the default tilesets.
Certainly my favourite tileset to date, 'Autumn' does so... six textures each for surfaces 1 & 2, with a good
spread of probabilities.

Gold! :o Didn't know this one, cheers!

My Gimp is kinda poor. I used Paint.NET for this entire thing, because I didn't have the time yet to learn GIMP properly... You want to give a hand?

What's titi's strategy?

I can throw together some new plain textures for surfaces 1 & 2, a chance to try out that new trick in the GIMP :)

... but it appears the trees are broken ?!?

I can be such an idiot at times... there's nothing wrong with the trees... I broke the renderer on my 'working copy' of the game... which obviously I should not have been using to try out a new tileset...

Looks very nice... I'll have a crack at those textures over the next couple of nights, I had a play with them yesterday... but just made them tile worse... but I'm nothing if not persistent :)

Great! I think its easily agreeable that the textures are far from perfect. Thanks for your help here!

:) I tried the volcanic tileset and LOVED it! even though I lost, I couldn't have had a much more enjoyable time than feeling like it was the end for my army in some kind of apocalyptic war. :D

I would love to see some more improvements in the future.

Glad you liked it! Of course, I can guarentee you that it wasn't my fault you lost. Unless of course, you were too busy admiring gameboy's trees, in which case you can blame him  .

Hopefully Silnarm will get around to the textures like he said. Of course, he's probably busy with GAE, but I'll PM him to ask anyway. It would be nice to see a more natural ground, with a less repetitive feeling, wouldn't it?

You're welcome to try to do better, of course. I just am happy with the rocks as they are.

If you can make something that everyone can deem as 'better' then I'll happily use it.

Dunno... Personally looks more cave-like than volcanic to me... However, I'm open to community suggestions. What do you guys think?

Good idea eliminator. However, you never gave me the download link. Say what, since I can't access my files, why don't you add it in and uploadÉ

Has anybody noticed the loud blowing sound in the background?  I personally find it very annoying.  The tileset looks very goood overall.  it would go well with some kind of tower defence mod.

Opinions? ::)
