This is a very undescriptive post. If by troop, you mean attack force then it really depends on the player.

Here's mine:

MAGIC:
-Battlemages x 32
-Archmages x 8
-Dragons x 8
-Behemoths x 4
-Ghost Armors x 16

TECH:
-Archers x 32
-Guards x 16
-Airships x 8
-Ornithopters x 8
-Battle Machines x 10
-Catapults x 6

Note that these are my game ending troops, and I actually don't use these exact numbers all the time. I like to adapt to the foe as well.

i think these would be the best units

magic:

best against land:  archmage(ground unit) or dragon(air unit)
best against air:  archmage(ground unit) or dragon(air unit)
best against both:  dragon(air unit) or archmage(ground unit)

overall:  archmage(ground unit) or dragon(air unit)
overall best against buildings:  archmage

tech:

best against land:  battle_machine(ground unit) or airship(air unit)
best against air:  battle_machine(ground unit) or ornithopter(air nuit)
best against both:  battle_machine(ground unit) or ornithopter(air unit)

overall:  battle_machine(ground unit) or ornithopter(air unit)
overall best against buildings:  catapult

hope this helps :)

Actually in magic, the best units against buildings are the Behemoth and Golem (anything that has the IMPACT attack type).

And overally, the best units in each game is the dragon and airship. This is because air units are not easily hit. The dragon has the advantage of being able to attack air as well, but the airship is more powerful. Since the majority of units are land (usually 96%+), the airship will do good, just make sure to have archers on standby for dragons. (ornithopters are too slow and expensive to produce to bother for anti-air).

the behemoth and golem do have impact attack types
but
650-750 or 170-320(whatever ice nova is)(energy) seems to be more powerful than 50-350 (impact) or 300-350(impact)

i know the multiplier stuff but i find the archmage better at buildings

Hmm, I'm a horseman-fetishist ^^

Tech:
8 Horsemans
16 Guards
12 Archers
6 Swordman
2 Airships

+

10 Workers !!!
I allway build defensetowers around my enemies - muahahahar!

-> Is enough for me to kill whole civilisations ^^

Magic:
24 Ghost-armors
8 Archmages

That's good enough ^^

All-in-all I don't really play on numbers, this is just a estimation ;-)

I take it you don't play as magic very much...  You need WAY more battlemages. Ghost armors can't match a scourge of battle mages.
I allway build defensetowers around my enemies - muahahahar!
Wicked, although it does work, but I prefer to build such a thing BEFORE I attack. Like the moment I can build them, I'll barricade the roads. Add a dozen archers there too, and I got an impassible road. Although it only really works in tech, which I don't play that often.

-Horsemen? Why horsemen? I find that their cost in guards will do better. So over priced...

@archmage101:
Lets say that I am attacking a castle. That's stone armor.
Energy does 190 - 370 damage, but energy on stone has a damage multiplier of 0.5. In short, I do half the damage (95 - 185).
Now if I use a behemoth, I'd do 300 - 350 damage, and impact on stone has a damage multiplier of 1.5, meaning I do 50% more damage (450 - 500).

Assuming that the building has 0 armor (most do), here's our results:

-ARCHMAGE: 95-185 damage per hit (req EP as well)
-BEHEMOTH: 450-500 damage per hit (no EP req)

The bottom line: the archmage wouldn't even be able to scratch the building compared to this monster!  Wood has very simular effects as well (same damage for the behemoth, 143 - 278 damage, still way less). Of course, the archmage has splash, but we're just going into raw damage here.

Yes that, too.
But why not during attack ? - maybee 10 towers direct around the enemies base ^^

only modification to magitech:unlimited gold(2000000000) :P
my dad's favorite strategy:
he starts of he starts producing a few workers
he's builds a farm and then starts harvesting tons of resources
and then he builds 1-2 barracks and starts continuously producing lots of troops
then he builds his blacksmith and gets all the upgrades
my dad never runs out of resources cause he has a zillion workers swarming all over the place
then he builds the technodrome and starts researching stuff
and then he gets attacked
but by that time he has:
16 archers
16 swordman
8-16 guards
4-16 horseman
and maybe a technician
he always likes to go against everything on cpu-ultra
he builds defense towers all over the place, he just about walls every opening with towers
and then of sourse another attack and he doesn't even realize it because he's get everything full of defensive buildings and troops like archers post around in large groups
every time i tell he to attack he say: "wait i don't have enough forces yet"
and when he says that, he's already assigned an 8th group of troops
he builds like 3 aerodromes and gets about:
5 ornithopters
10-20 airships
and then he attacks
with 3/4 of his force
and he wipes out all three camps in a row
he usually plays in mountains(map)

while all that happens he gets attack about a zillion times
but easily fends of his feeble enemy

just wait till the roman faction is done
he'll have the biggest glest empire the world has seen

unless one of you can beat him

i'd like to see someone beat him

i am not exaggerating in fact i'm pretty sure he does much better than this

and this is before i was trying to balance rebellion; Rebellion was pretty weak
here's a piece of paper that has one of his greatest games recorded on it

Don't even bother with Behemoths.  They almost always get killed before any damage can be inflicted on the enemy.

Only bring the behemoths in AFTER you defeat your enemy. You make them, and take them with you, but have them wait just outside the base, and after all attacking enemies are down, bring them in to take out the buildings.

Tech
for me, ill get a large number of archers and leave em at all the main roads, then get guards as soon as i can, and then horsemen once theyre available, as soon as i have all that, ill get right to the flying machines. Ill make about 5 technicians, and they can build the air thingy place together. once it's been built, ill turn em all into battle machines, and then make an infinate number of air ships.

Magic
Same sort of thing, ill make as many daemons as i can until i can get something stronger. then once i can, ill make as many dragons as possible, and ill make one initiate create behemoths one by one over and over and over, until theres no wood left :)

lol. I have played magic games without making any daemons at all. Usually I end up attacking with 3 - 5 groups of battlemages, a group of archmages, a group of ghost armor, and half a group of dragons, half a group of behemoths. Works for me.

Heh, that's my final end game strategy.

BTW: I guess I didn't pay attention to the posts above very well. Archmage101, I would challenge your dad in one on one in an UNMODIFIED magitech. Well, I would if I could, but my internet just boots me. Everytime. Bah...

Eh, I read too fast. Still, why not go directly to battlemages? That's usually the best unit to spam in Magic...

i don't think you would stand a chance against my dad :P
he'd kick your butt out the window, but probably not before your internet did  :P

he's easily won a 1 on 3

setup:
human:tech team:1
cpu(utra):magic team:2
cpu(utra):tech team:2
cpu(utra):magic team:2

and this would be a fully functional magitech with no modifications except unlimited resources

For petes sake, that is simply cheating. No matter how you want to put it. I'm sorry that your dad is not 100% healthy, but the reason he wins is because of cheating. If my internet kicks me out, its gonna be because he cheated. I wouldn't even challenge him just for that.

JEEZZ  :o

i don't see how that's cheating
it's just making it more realistic
you would never run out of resources that fast anyway
it just to make up for the limited amount of resources on the map

and all limited resources is, is a game shortener

i played a massive game before i new about the XMLs
i conquered half the map(mountains) and i was against two CPU-ultra magics, me i was tech

i took out one of their camps, but i was barely able to conquer the final one...because i ran out of resources

and i had a final battle and then...barely conquered the final camp

I don't see how pausing the game is cheating.  If the computer can do unlimited things at the same time, then why should a human player be restricted to one at a time?

Forgive my poor wording. I have nothing against pausing the game. I have done that often when I switch to units that are far away, or to give attack commands to units, or even to simply select a large number of units. What I find is cheating is the unlimited resources clause.

i don't see how that's cheating
I take it this is your first RTS, isn't it (or your first video game every, maybe)?

well

no it's not my first video game and not my first RTS

but since i can customize it to give me a longer game, i do so

just get it through you're head, it's not cheating it's called "customizing for a longer game"  :P

If both players get unlimited resources and its you vs cpu (utra) then it's not cheating.
