his ideas:
BEGINNINGThis is a backstory for Glest that I have written, inspired by the orginal backstory for Glest.
By expanding the game story, I could help Glest out, so this is what I decided. Below is a rough
draft of my game story. Since the orginal backstory of Glest focused primrailly on Magic, I
decided to focus my story on Science. Forgive me if you are by any way appaled by this story, my
apolgies. Well, on with the story:
Deep rests Science in the Mind
as Magic deep in the Heart;
Those on which the Will is strong,
Those will reign on Their behalf.
Science was a fairely new doctrine, compared to the creation of Magic at the dawn of time. At the dawn of time, the followers of Magic played important roles in the creation of primivate socities and nations. Altough Magic has a dangerously high rate of failure of higher-level spells, and the
many failures of low-level spells, Mages proberly changed the weather for the benift of the caster, contorl the use of fire, and could summon monsters with the whim of their hand. While Magic reciviced much attention, Technogly also played its role in the rising of Man. While
Magic brought the rain for farming, technogly invented the plow. While Magic blessed hunters with
enchanced eyeshight and speed, Technogly blessed hunters with spears and camofloge. While Magic use senses to see where to go, Science use the stars to see where they are. Magicians are rare, and most tribes would be lucky to be blessed with more than 35 magicians during its lifetime, so technogly was relied on usually. Even when magicians existed, technogly still assisted when the Mages failed, which is very often. Technogly and Science are very similar, however, Science wasn't devolped until the rise of the city-state of Spari.
Spari is different from other city-states formed during its period. Unlike most nations, which were kingdoms or priestdoms, it was a Republic, where people elect their repesentives. In the begining of the Republic's history, Mages and Wise Men ran for election, but soon, Mages were
banished from the city-state, sometimes even killed. It is still unclear why Spari did this.
Prehaps it was jealousy, haterd, or worse. According to recently revealed doucments, in the Spari Year 50, the last Archmage was put to death, and all elements of Magic was removed from Spari. The residents of Spari was very brave and must have been moviated by something terrible, like a bad mage, to elimante all the magicians, both good and bad.
It is likely that Spari is the first place where Science prospered. Philosphers reasoned on why the Earth was made, and was thought to question everything and everyone. The first Scienists of Spari did not just focus themselves on ideas. They also built outstanding new inventions such as schools and libraries and laid the foundations of Medicine and Algerba. Yet, ideas is what made Spari most famous. Strange ideas were exchanged such as that the Sun is at the center of the Solar System, not the Earth, and that there are no Gods, however these people were expounded by radicals who was distrusted by many. However, unlike other civilizations, they were allowed to speak their views. If these radicals lived in another city-state, and told an ounce of what he
belivied, then he would be lynched by the primivate people. Even the moderates of Spari would be lynched if they lived in another city-state. While a variety of views were shared in Spari, most people were very nationalist, and belivied in the desinty of Spari's domiance and
greatness.
It is no suprise that Spari started to take over Glest. In the begining, several city-states arounded Spari revolted against their kings and presists, allying with Spari. Spari, at first,
allowed for these city-states to join as citizens in Spari. Many people love the ideas of a republic, and idealizied Spari. However, Spari became corrupt with glory and arrogantly limited
citizenship and raised taxes. At the highest extent of Spari's rule, 64% of Glest was ruled by Spari, and yet, only 35% of all who lived in lands owned by Spari were citizens in Spari, and only 20% of those citizens could vote in Spari, not that any of them did vote, because there was
a polltax, and that even if you did vote, your vote wouldn't matter because the ballotbox would be stuffed with thousands of fake votes anyway.
There was much resistance to Spari's domiance, and rebellions were very common indeed. Spari's military was vastly spread apart, and republican debates that served well in the past proved
itself to be obostle and even deadly. (One debate over a bill to distrubte land equally caused a riot that killed 50 people and injured 260.) Only the rise of Juial Maio, a wily exile and warrior, saved Spari from sudden destruction. Juial destoryed the useless Republic in its enterity in the Spari Year 512, and turned Spari into a monarchy. Most people in the city of Spari and the people that lived in the lands occupied by Juial supported this new regime, as Juial cared about liberty and the poor more than the Republicans ever could. It must be noted that Juial and his descendants were magicians.
Spari wasn't saved from its eventual destruction by Juial. Instead of a rapid decline like those of past empires, Spari was destined to slowly lose power in Glest, surrendering it to warlords and barbaians one acre at a time. It is important to note also that the rise of Juial paved the
way of organization of magicians into 'schools'. These schools lived all around Glest, but these magicians rejected to see the peasentary or the poor. They only intended to meet the rich and powerful, so they can secure power. This is why people soon forgot that magicians was once
freindly towards them, and only know the magician who pushed the beggar on the street, or gave that beggar the evil eye.
Scienists became the freinds of the peasentary. They also courted favor with the freinds in high places too, but scienists supported the masses if rulers and the people came in conflict. Scienists gave their last pence to the beggar, and sometimes dressed as the commonfolk, just to
see how they live. These Scienists advanced their field so much that they knew everything, expect Magic. It not that Scienists know how Magic works. It is the 'WHY' that bothered them. Why did Magic was invented? Why did Magicians exist? There was suggestions that magic wasn't real, and that was accepted, for a while. It was obivous magic was real. No, the suggestion they accepted was that they were unnatural. They were conflicting with nature, battling against the forces of nature. Therefore, siding with nature, Scienists vow to destory mages. While the regural Scienist pray for the poor, he curses at the magicians.
Personally, after compiling this essay after a long while, we belivie that the reason that Scienists hated Magicians so much is that Juial, a magician, destoryed the Republic. The Republic champoined Science and Technogly. Juial, however, after declaring himself King, restriced Sciencists, fearing that Science has grown too powerful, and maybe because of revenge of the banishment of all magicians in the Spari Year 50. Several of these Scienists were die-hard Republicans and wanted self-rule back. All of the Scienists placed the blame of the destruction of the Republic on Juial, and claimed once all the magicians are gone, then the Republic will come back. These Scienists have forgotten that there were much flaws in the Republic, instead idealizing the Republic to such an extent that they never thought farther than the Republic.
Of course, Scienists needed the help of the royalty and the barbaians who ruled Glest. It was hard persuading these people, but after a long while, these people decided to ally with the Scienists. The magicians were too powerful in their eyes, and they were a bit suspicious on the part of the peasentry. Plus, the estates of the Magicians were ripe for plucking, and a little extra cash wouldn't hurt.
Finally, Scienists needed to overthrow the King of Spari. The current king, the Archmage Shandalar, was old and fragile, and the military was tired of his luntiacl speeches and laivsh contests. Now, Spari was a pale shadow of its former glory. It is only a collection of slums and
theives, thrown together. It was ripe for a revolution.
Scienists took cheer on the "Repression", which occured in the Spari Year 1000. This was a great and sudden movement with its main goal the destruction of magic everywhere. It started with the murder of a young peasent boy by a bad Elementailist, which was really a Scienist in
disguise. This minor event snowballed into the greatest purge ever in history. Schools were burnt. Magicians were lynched. Properties confisicated. Most Magicians, including the last King of Spari, Shandalar, have fled into the four corners of Glest, and the "Repression" was
considered finished by the Spari Year 1005. The Republic was reformed, and the Scienists took pride. The revolution has finished, and now the Scienists can start on rebuilding Spari's domaince over Glest.
Yet, the magicians were down, but not out. Indeed, several magicians were protected by some barons and dukes, who belivied that securing their alliance will futher their own goals. Some people geiunely belivied the Magicians were attacked wrongly, and hated Science. There was loyalists to the last King Shandalar. Plus, some people in Spari were disilluisoned by the failures of the Republic to root out corruption and bring the nation of Spari back to power. The "Counter-Repression" has begun. All areas of Glest is now under this conflict, between the
Magicans and the Scienists, for domaince of Spari and the world.
Today, it is the first of the new year, the Spari Year 1010. There is nothing to celeberate however. We must now conclude, it is now daylight, and we must ascend back to our garrison duties. Our city is under seige by terrible enemies. We really don't care if there are magicians or scienists. These two civilizations need each other, and without each other, they wouldn't exist. We wouldn't exist. Why don't these people live in peace?
But, no, they can't. They will never live in peace. They will contuine fighting, and leave me and thousands of other peasents to fear for their lives and suffer for their useless feud.

(Here is also an interperation of the Properechy I got today that I wanted to write down, so here it is...)
PROPHET CENTERAL:
Deep rests Science in the Mind
as Magic deep in the Heart;
Those on which the Will is strong,
Those will reign on Their behalf.
In this week's edition of Prophet Centeral, let us exmaine this properchy. This properchy came from the Deliph Orcale in Spari in the Spari Year 1002, in the middle of the "Repression". This is worderd in a strange manner, obiviously to allow for any fool to interpt this into any manner,
as it have been done. However, let a professional do this:
"Deep rest Science in the Mind"
(This is true, very true. Science is movivated by the Mind, the intellcut.)
"as Magic deep in the Heart;"
(Of course! Magicians belivied in the Heart as the root of their powers, not their Mind, which
they call useless and disgusting.)
"Those on which the Will is strong,"
(The Will. The Will can mean anything and everything. It can mean valor in battle, maybe destinty. But, according to Prophet Centeral, the Will is the Will of the Gods. The Gods, long ago, have made a 'Will' after creating Glest. The 'Will' pluses with it great powers of the Gods.
Whoever that contorls the 'Will' contorls...Glest. It doesn't contorl the Gods, but it can allow
the possesor to rival with the Gods. This is why the 'Will' is protected by the Gods, and some Gods even tried to burn it, with no success. I think this properchy says that the two sides, the
Scienists and the Magicians, will go on a quest in search of the Will, and they will both find it, and they will both fight over this Will. These people will resort in pulling the Will until the Will finally breaks up into two parts, the 'Strong' and the 'Weak'. Now, at the begining, both sides will not know which is the Strong Part of the Will and which is the Weak, so they'll
fight for both parts of the Will, so they will have 100% chance of having the Strong part of the Will.)
"Those will reign on Their behalf."
(Those people who will have the Strong Part of the Will, or maybe both parts of the Will [and proberly binded those parts together], will reign on 'Their behalf'. Most likely, the 'Their'
will be the Gods. At first, the Gods will be angry that these people have the 'Will', but maybe see that this can be useful. These people will be 'contorlled' by the Gods, and while thinking they are indepedent, actually slaves. They have the 'Will' which gives them powers, but they won't be able to use them unless with the consent of the Gods. This faction will find itself pawns and will resort to rebellion, but the people holding the Will is fully brainwashed and doesn't understand what is going on. Many people will take a posiston against the Gods after this, maybe calling the Gods evil and corrupt, which may be rightly true. The Counter-Repression will end, as Humanity will unite together, setting aside their differences, to invade and destroy the Gods, and to set free the 'Will'.)
Note: This is just a interperation, you can reject it or accept it. I think this way would be good because you do say that maybe the two factions will reconcil their differences. If they do, they will have to fight some other enemy forces...like in warcraft3...
DOWN WITH TEH GODS.
Techincally, it doesn't have to be Gods. It can be any race you want the Humans to fight after the end of the Counter-Repression, like Demons, Orcs, etc. What counts is the Will and its' ulitamte power.
