I think that Glest has already "taken off;" just look how many people are on the forums at any time. The problem is that most people are waiting to go on the IRC until it's popular; hence, small IRC population.

What we really need, as many people have pointed out, is a master server list.

PS: I'm on the IRC right now...

Lots of Open-source games have much less players than that.

Of course, i played multiple games on open-source with very low populated communities...but for a good game to get going you have to create strong bonds between the players and it will form a solid community for a multiplayer game.  :P

With a solid bond of players together in a community it will consume any new player that comes by without him just leaving.

In my opinion...you cant just wait until a bunch of lone people come by and they will stay forever. They need friends.  :)
So in conclusion, I suggest stop focusing on trying to see how many people there are on and things like that, and start focusing on making friends with those already around you.

What if we were to hold 'official' tournaments. Though it has problems of time zones. Suppose we host it at different times (ie: we have an australian tourny, an NA/SA tourny, a EU Tourny, etc;). We give a big notice on the GENERAL DISCUSSION BOARD (this one is not popular) and it is stickied (deleted after tourney) and has both registration and open play. We set a time for everyone to enter the IRC, then an organizer who will have plotted the first few parts of the tourny using registered players will notify the players who they are against, and then the drop-ins are randomly matched. The winners move up in the tourney up till the final, where the winner and runner up are posted in a high scores site (ie: part of glest.110mb.com for multiplayer highscores).

In short, we gather at one set organized time posted WELL ahead so that planning can be taken, and everyone will known about it, then we all duke it out for fun, fame, and glory!

I COULD organize one of these, except that I am rather limited by online restrictions, and parents who wouldn't understand 'I need to go online to organize this tourny between twenty guys right now!!!'. Naturally the flaw of dial-up. And parents. Of course, if it could be registration only (less people, but easiern to make sure everyone gets a fight). I would recommend that, and then I could get all the registration together and we could have the tourney shortly after, after I organized the data and passed it on to someone who wants to help.

Of course, such a thing would only be possible with help and determination of everyone. It's no good without players, and the more the better.

*Of course, there would need to be rules, like standard maps that are voted on, everyone plays same map, though each round (round 1, round 2, finals, etc;) has a different map chosen, that everyone has. It would need to be magitech, and games would need to have a time limit to prevent the rounds from being delayed. Except what happens when we reach the time limit? Who wins? (highest score??? Most units produced???)

Since there is few players, organizing multiplayer games in advance for a particular date is a good idea.

The solution for different hours at different places of the world is to play week-ends. If people don't work week-ends then they could play at any time of the day.

I would be free to play for the week-end of Jully 25th and 26th .

Instead of having a time limit what if you had a round a day. so round 1 would be saturday round 2 would be sunday. round 3 would be the next saterday. have 2 separet turneys one that startes midnight gmt and one that starts noon gmt? I think maps should be decided a week before hand to give people time to download and plan there stratigy.

I like the idea of setting up some times when people can play. Maybe if there was a list of times and then people could put their names down for times when they are available. If some else matchs the time then you know you have an opponent and can meet up on IRC.

BTW, Platyhelminth I am free this weekend and will be on IRC looking for a game  ;)

I agree with Wciow, but even if people don't put their names down I think having "peak" time slots will create a situation where more people are online to play together. The hard part would be deciding what the time slots are.

Indeed. Probably midnight and noon GMT as suggested. This gives two peak times so that everyone can play. Of course, for some people, this would end up being the morning, for others, the night, and many may have it in the middle of the day. Unless anyone else has a better idea?

I think a very good way to create gaming schedules is to setup a so called "ladder" system.
Have a website where you can choose to partecipate in different types of tournaments such as "1vs1" or "2vs2" etc..

Once the game is finished, scores are updated on the website, showing ranking of the teams. Schedule of matches can happen on IRC (irc.freenode.org #glest), but having a ladder system will improve online gaming organization a lot.

If the Glest developers/administrators need some simple software to create this "ladder" website (i am a senior software developer), I am able to work on it as long as they provide the hosting space.

Well, we can also organize a ladder here. We get the names who wants to participate, etc. Just the system has to be organized, how the games should happen, scoring, winning. We make a topic for the current results. It's not that hard :P

I will open them tomorrow morning (CET) you can start registering then. Check the rules and everything, and tell me if you found a problem. (since it's still in an experimental state) Hop in the IRC (irc:\\irc.freenode.net\glest) we are talking there.

The idea seems great, and I would LOVE to do it, but I don't have the internet power to download glest 3.2.2...

Maybe once I get it downloaded, I'll challenge, but it'll have to wait until I get it. Oh, and I guess I'll need at least one person to play against!

I figured that since a few other online games like Nexiuz, etc; work on dial-up (even if the ping can be wild, from 500ms to several seconds!), maybe I'll give glest another chance. I mean, I played one game, and was kicked in the first minute... However, as I said, I gotta get glest first. We also should have a GAE version of each, which is just the standard 3.2.2 with GAE installed over top, on which we must decide the version. Hopefully GAE will sometime in the future have all the files needed, and wont have to depend on 3.2.2....
