Can't change resolution
« on: 3 June 2009, 01:43:17 »
Im running glest on ubuntu jaunty and the default 640x480 resolution sucks, but despite changing the values in the glest.ini the game still runs at default. So if anyone knows why, or if this is a bug id appreciate some help. I installed glest from the Add/Remove Packages App in ubuntu and its version is 3.2.1 so i dont know if thats the problem or not.

Sounds like a bug. Glest.ini should either change to the selected resolution or (using its advanced error handling capabilities) crash. Maybe someone with more Linux experience would be able to answer this question better in the Linux section of the forums.

Do the values stay at what you changed them to or do they go back to the default?

Hmm, I don't use a unix OS, so I may be wrong, but is 640x480 the default really??? As far as I know, the default is usually 1024 x 768. I myself experienced a crash when taking a photo ('E') on any resolution not on the exact aspect ratio. Try it again with that aspect ratio, and try the size I said above. If it doesn't work, I guess its a unix thing maybe...?

Yeah, default is 640*480 and the values stay after i change them, the game just doesnt seem to want to accept the new values. I get no error messages either. Game runs fine other than crap resolution. Another thing, im encountering this problem on my laptop and desktop PC. Im wondering though if it may have something to do with the fact that i have to change the files owner to my self as apposed to root in order to change the values. Ill try it again with the ownership back to root, that just might be the problem lol.

I don't recall any default window size set in the code and if the values stay then it must be using a different glest.ini file. Try renaming the one you are modifying and see if Glest complains.

So, as near as i can figure, glest doesnt care about glest.ini, game starts and runs fine without it. And if i change a setting using the ingame menu, the glest.ini doesnt get the changes, somehow its saving settings somewhere else. I think the main problem is im using the package from ubuntu's repository, so im going to do a fresh install or something.

Edit: Installing glest my self = win  :) and the ubuntu glest package is pure crap

I don't know linux well, but this does remind me of how windows app data stored the ini in a separate folder inside this app data, and as a result, the ini in the program files wasn't used. While I don't think linux does anything like app data, it might be worth checking. Do the screenshots save in the screens folder of glest when you hit the 'e' button? If not, then there is something remotely similar to app data.

Tell me if the reinstall works!

Linux might store it in ~/.glest (user's home directory)

Reinstalled with the loki installer, went flawless, sept the libopenal thing but that wasn't an issue really. I definitely suggest not using the package in the ubuntu repository.

SO everything is working now? Congrats. Enjoy glest, and be sure to check out available mods a
Code: [Select]
glest.110mb.com/mdc.php. This should have everything from techtrees, to factions, to tilesets, to scenarios, and even maps. Pretty much everything except translations (which I can't manage because I am uni-lingual! heh!).

Oh yeah good times, i actually want to do a remake of the age of empires 2 civs in glest, with all original models. I wonder if theres a way to make technologies affect building architecture and other things like aoc? Going from dark to imp age was definetly alot of the fun. Id love some feedback on the idea though.
