Where is the editor?
« on: 13 June 2009, 04:04:18 »
I am new as of today to Glest! I have used other game engines, but this one baffles me... When I download the "tools" it just gives me examples! Where can I get the editor and stuff?

glest_tools/bin
Contains the map editor, G3D viewer, and a Max7 export plugin.
For Blender export/import scripts go to http://www.titusgames.de/

For anything else, it doesn't exist :)

Calm down! Glest is not a commercial product, so people have to use their free time to improve glest. If you want to impliment GUI's for all the stuff you said, then people at the GAE section of the forums will help you.

But seriously, try to be a bit more polite.

Are you kidding me??? If you want to make a mod, you're just going to have to do this the way everyone else does, by modeling and XMLing yourself.

However, there is a scenario creator: http://glest.110mb.com/scenario_creator

You think Glest is hard to edit?!?

Go mod Zoo Tycoon 2 and tell me if it is easier, Glest has all animations separated on models, on Zoo Tycoon 2, you have a model and about 30 animations in a diferent format!
So don't argue about something you didn't even try to do.

But Zoo Tycoon was not designed to be edited!  It is a commercial product!

It is fine to edit it, there are hunderds of people that do, and it is legal.

Take a look at this website for example:

Most of the stuff you want to change is easily done through XML, which is pretty much the easiest thing in the world to do.  This is why there isn't a Warcraft-style unit editor, because it's really just as easy to modify the XML files, so making a "unit editor" would be a complete waste of time.  I didn't even know what XML was before I started modding Glest and I had it all figured out in about half an hour, so don't whine.

I never said it was hard. I mearly said "this one baffles me" ok now that I get we should help glest and that it isn't a commercial project (I thought it was and this was just a demo tool kit) we should help it out as much as possible... what is the XML? I have never used It before and would would like to learn...

Only Blender? I have made 3D shabpes, but how do you make them move and stuff? Would I be able to load a unit from the game onto blender for an example?

They are the people who are updating the source for glest, and implementing new features. They are in the Glest advanced engine section of this forum.

I disagree; depending on what you are thinking of as an "earthquake." Would it not be possible to create an attack similar to the archmage's static fire, only invisible and with some dust particles in the splash zone?

Or are you talking about only in XML?

Yeah, that would be possible, but if he means something more like the "god powers" from Age of Mythology, or the special bombardments and such from C&C:Generals, then the answer is no.

Yes, I would like it as an attack for my heroes.

OFF TOPIC-I have played AOM and I think it's awesome...

I think you could come kinda close to that.   You could give your hero a really powerful attack with a massive splash radius and have it require a lot of EP so that it might take several minutes to regenerate. If you only wanted it to be usable once, you could do the same thing, but set your hero's EP regen rate to zero.

Ok, back on-topic. I still have NO IDEA how to edit ANYTHING. Ok here is what we will do. I will make a list of things and then in your reply, you will make a list of thigs corresponding to the number it belongs to, with the answere to the question.

1) Unit editor
-Can I change the # of "people" in each unit so it is a battalion?
-Can I make it so if I research something, each unit has to purchase it to receive the benifits
2) Faction Editor
-Pretty much tell me hot to make/edit factions, and how to put units/techs into it
3) Resources
-Can I make it so if you have a building it get resources over time and have only 1 resource?
4) building editor
-I am pretty sure you know what I am getting at

You could make a unit that has more than one model, so... kinda?

If you mean like, research "armor" and then have each of your units upgrade to an armored version of itself, then you can do this with morphing.

I think you would do well to have a look at the Glest Guide.  It will get you started with a lot of what you need to know.

here's where you would find the XML

windows: C:\Program files\Glest(may be a version number)\

and all through those files you will be able to find various things like the menu/maps/tilesets and of course factions and techs(you will find XMLs all through, and i suggest you copy the game and rename the copied version so that if you mess up making changes you have a good copy of the game)

linux: /usr/share/games/glest/

a tip: if you are not the administrator of the CPU then either ask the administrator to give you permissions necessary to change the files, or you can copy the game file and paste it onto your desktop, and then link the glest exe(right-click on the icon and then select properties) to the glest game file on your desktop

hope this helps

PS:if you have a MAC computer then I have no clue

What do you mean there is no earthquake? Haven't any of you guys played GAE (Glest Advanced Engine - A modified, up to date Glest with bonus features)? One of the units (sorcoress or something - a magic unit) has an earthquake attack. While the attack is no perfect, it randomly damages units, and is pretty interesting in looks. Download GAE at glest.codemonger.org and check out the unit (its not made until later, play as magic and keep going until you unlock the subfaction).

As for XMLs, I am actually secretly attempting to develope a XML maker, which will make the resources, units, and stuffs XMLs and folder layout. However, you will still have to add the models yourself, though detailed instructions will be given. BTW: I will be posting a topic about this in Gen Discussion soon, as soon as I get a discussion page on glest.110mb.com up. It is still in the planning stage, and is an ONLINE PHP POWERED WIZARD. I can't program well enough to make a desktop app, so it must be a PHP powered site. However, I don't expect to be finished before the summer...

I have, but I thought he was refering to "god powers" (like from AoM)

Nice! That should save a lot of time for making xmls! Will it be able to edit existing xmls?

I'm not sure what you mean... Wouldn't 'god powers' just be a term to describe super attacks?

Well, sort of, only you do not use units to use the powers, they are used from a bar in the top of the screen.
