i mainly need bear,cat and bird

http://javacrpg.sourceforge.net/ they have a gpl license too( as far as I know ) and they have a bear. I don't know if they have something else...

You can use the bird in china tech (It has a crow, I helped my bro make it so I know that you can use it if you want.)

Here's a great tutorial on animation.  It will have you animating in a matter of hours.
