User Groups

Some other forums have things called user groups, and most of you should understand what I'm talking about.  Basically, a user can join some groups at any time, and other groups only upon invitation.  So it would be cool if these forums had these user groups.  For example, if there was a user group of aliens, then, if the user group was set up this way, you could join only by invitation.  And the person who starts the user group invites people, but I would say any user-created groups should be all-inclusive.  Only a moderator could create a invitation only user group (for example, GLADE Team Member).

I would say that there should be requirements for a user to be able to create their own user group.  They should have to have at least 250 posts and have been a member of the forums for at least six months.

There is user groups. However, GAE and the Glest team are the only ones, and are by invitation only. I'm not sure if any forums allow users to make their own. They usually require administer privileges.

Usergroups on this board seem a little antiquated, as seen by how the GAE and Glest groups haven't been updated for a long time, even with new people like Silnarm helping out (though he is considered to be a part of the glest team). Also, user groups like moderators are seemingly broken, since Titi has apparently lost his privileges.

With Martino's absence from the board, we would need a new admin in order to get user groups. I do support the idea though!

I think that the invitation-only groups could have an optional icon to go along with them.  Like a small GLADE team icon.

Also, user groups could be used to describe skills in Glest people have, for example modeling or C++ or HTML/javascript.  This could be useful when tracking down potential volunteers.

That would be handy, but there's still the problem of the fact that Martino (and most of the Glest team, the admins) are inactive. Tucho's the most active and its been a while...

Still, that would be nice (Web Design Leader).

I think that's all too complicated and there is no real need currently.
Also I don't like the idea that one is a member and others are not members of something.
Ok an admin is needed but thats all. That's my opinion on this topic.

I personally like the forum structure as it is. What we would need one day is a website for the glest community and their results, but thats all.

Try Megaglest! Improved Engine / New factions / New tilesets / New maps / New scenarios

You're probably right. It's an unneeded thing, though it would be interesting, but probably won't happen.

What do you mean?

There will be few groups which are set apart from other users; it will be mostly the GLADE Team, the GAE team, and maybe one more I am not thinking of, but there is no need to worry about a kind of "club" mentality, which would be propagated through the user group system.
