Glest Won't Connect
« on: 29 July 2009, 22:39:25 »
So I just downloaded Glest and I immediately tried to connect to the server to try to join the game. However, when I click connect, it pauses, then nothing happens as if I didn't even hit connect. I have Glest downloaded and installed on my USB drive, does that make a difference? As long as I have the internet on my computer, it should work right? Thanks in advance  ;D

Did you put in the IP address of the player you are trying to play with? For more info, see the multiplayer forum on these boards. There is a stickied post for 'how to use multiplayer'. Please note that there isn't all that many people in the IRC, so use of the ladder that @kukac@ made is best.

If still stumped, give me a call and I'll give you REAL detailed instructions!

I will try playing against my friend on his other computer and see if it works. I just won my first game today against the mages :D. They were tough at first, but I held in there and defeated them with my super big army lol. This game is good =P. I'm glad I saw it.

One slot you make human and the other you make network, close all the other ones.

On vanilla 3.2.2:

1 - Host should set slot 1 to Human

2 - Host should set slots 2 3 or 4 (depending on players) to Network

3 - Client(s) should select 'join' from the main menu and type the the correct IP of the server.

4 - Client(s) should say connected, Host's network slot should have the name of the Client(s)

5 - Host can start the game.

Thank you very much, it worked. However, when I played against my friend, I was having no trouble but my friend was experiencing lag and eventually the screen blacked out. I hosted the game (as I said in the original post, Glest is downloaded and installed on my USB drive, and the IP address on my computer still worked, does it make a difference?). Is multiplayer usually this laggy? If not, what should I do to fix it? If so, is there any way to fix it? Thanks in advance  :)

You can't play 4 players or it will lag huge. But I play 3 player and it is fine. I go through a modem in my house the network doesn't leave my house. What do you have?

It is just my friend and I and that is all. I don't lag but he does. I have no clue why.

Are you using a modem or are you going through the net?

I have internet and I have a modem so I guess I go through modem but my friend is using linksys currently. We both have the same OS, so we dont' have to worry about that.

I think you mean you're playing over the internet, since you mentioned your friend's router. If your friend is anywhere EXCEPT your house, he is over the web.

Depending on your connection, you may have some lag, and even with a fast connection, there will be minimal lag.

Ah ok. We were playing in the same house at the time, is that why? I was still using the modem and he was using that router. He was lagging so badly though the screen liked black out and he had to do the whole ctrl+alt+dlt thingo. So do we have to be in seperate places?

No, but I think you'd have to be both over that router if you are in the same place. Of course, I don't have a router, so I can't be sure...

If youre asking whether two players need to be in separate places, the answer is no.  When our network was up and running me and modman played a full game of glest (on a local network) with no lag, even though there was four players (2 CPU and 2 humans) and the map was 256x256 and even our cheap router.

The reason why he is lagging so much is undoubtedly (from what i gathered) that his computers specs are alot worse than yours.  To check this see if his computer runs high RAM eating apps at the same speed and FPS rate yours does.

Oh no..trust me..this is a new laptop he is using and customized and everything. It is much better than mine, my computer is worse his is much faster. I don't know...I use broadband internet with a modem and he use linksys. Is the reason why he lags is because I have plugged internet and he has wireless internet? And now we tried going against each other again and I don't lag at all. However, when he plays, at first it is normal with minimal lag, then the lag gets worst until his characters don't move and the screen turns black. We can play up to 7 minutes until this happens. Anyone have any other ways to fix it and what is causing this problem?
