I agree Linux is used for all the big stuff, i heard it was used for Spiderwick and i think LOTR.
what i meant was Windows is a lot more popular with low level users like u and me :)

I've read that Linux is gaining more popularity through netbooks and is now a threat to Windows (read Microsoft acknowledges Linux threat to Windows client).

Yes, if game developers started making their games Linux-compatible then windows would lose a huge chunk of it's users..

Yes, I'm excited about the new Chrome OS.  I also hear Microsoft is coming out with their similar project: Gazelle.

Quote from: that Gazelle site you just posted
The research team claims it has successfully browsed 19 of the 20 most popular sites as reported by Alexa with its prototype, but admits the performance of the prototype was only "acceptable."
Well, at least "acceptable" is a heck of a lot better than Microsoft's current browser!

You know, that Gazelle thing is kind of uncool.  I mean, there already is Safari, and on safaris people hunt gazelle and other animals.  That kind of takes off on Mac.  But anything to disassociate microsoft with the dreaded internet explorer is a good plan.  I use Opera.  It scored 100% on that test, but I think that firefox is MUCH better.

The writer of that article is so right.  I look around at my university and see computers with Windows Vista Premium, Microsoft Office (the latest version), and Adobe Photoshop installed, and they have no problem unnecessarily spending money on THAT crap, but at the same time they just cut three majors last year because of budget shortcomings.  "Oh, so you're an Engineering Management major?  Sorry, we don't offer that anymore!" -.-

Yes this article is good. But there is a small difference between free softwares and communism according to Richard Stallman :

Quote
Communism advocates public ownership of *all* property and you advocate
    public ownership of *all* software.

"Public ownership" means that the government decides what to do. We
believe that you should really own your copies of software. You
should decide what to change, and when to redistribute it. This is
not much like Communism. Communism operated by command; free software
recruits voluntary cooperation. Communism failed; free software is
succeeding.

Actually, this is dragging on too much. I'm going to side with gameboy (partially). Who cares?

Some people prefer windows for its ease of use, some people prefer linux for its customizablity. Some people prefer macs because... um... gee, I dunno why... And some people prefer other OS's because... wait, there's other OS's?!?

Honestly speaking, the whole topic violates people's number 1 right. Choice. We cannot take people's choice away for things (with some exceptions, such as homosexuality, terrorism, abortion, spinach, etc;).

By giving people the choice, we let them decide by their preferences. Of course, plenty cheat and have both linux and windows, or both mac and windows or both 'other' and windows (other can be...um... lots of things, like DOS  ;D ).

Well, point by point:
homosexuality: Why? I suppose you are arguing for this on religious grounds. People should not conform to your religion, or indeed anyone else's.
terrorism: Watch the news. Lot's of people recruited by terrorist groups have no choice.
abortion: Same as homosexuality.
spinach: He obviously was joking here :)

I think that the "Mine's Better" Ideology of people who have only tried one OS is laughable.  I mean, don't say yours is better unless you have thoroughly and unbiasedly investigated the others.  I like my vista, but I bet I would like Linux or Mac too.  I'm just not at the point where I might switch.  According to the reviews and independent comparisons I have read, Linux is a favorite for coders and computer savvy people, Mac is for people who are novices and are not as good with computers, and Windows has the huge market share.  Of course, beginners could use Linux, Mac users might be pro coders, and windows people might not necessarily like their windows.  (Example: I hate some features of my windows, and 70% of Microsoft employees confess to use Google, not MSN.)  Although some of you have tried all 3 big OS's, so you can be a good judge.

I've used all three and I think Linux is definitely the best.
If you ever do switch, then switch to Kubuntu 9.04, it's my favorite distribution.
And I would help you with any problems you might face. And if you want Linux completely free you need to download it off kubuntu.org, and burn it too a CD.

Wait, I didn't know there was such a thing as a non-free linux!  I always assumed that that kind of thing was a scam.  And I know my Vista is several GB because it came on a DVD.  Linux is 700-MB?  Sorry for all the questions I am an O.S. Noob.
