GAE plus extras install question
« on: 17 August 2009, 11:10:03 »
Well I installed vanilla Glest 3.2.2 yesterday and have a quick play but seems GAE is the way to go so am going to "upgrade."

Do I need to install Glest 3.1.2 first or does GAE work with 3.2.2? All the instructions are for 3.1.2 so assume I will have to download the older version first.

Been looking at the Mods and out of them think I'll just go for the Megapack v4 and Advanced Tutorials for now.

From what I've read FPM is a bit unfinished and may be worth skipping, even though I hear it was under development in parallel with GAE to start. Is this correct?

Any others you would strongly recommend for a newbie?

Any GAE only ones that I haven't read about as they are not listed with the standard Glest ones?

It will work just fine with 3.2.2

FPM was in development alongside GAE, but is currently in limbo, and yes, it's far from finished.

Cheers.

I have a 64bit processor (Xeon Core2Quad) but am running XP32, do I want to use the i686 or sse2? I would assume sse2 as it's the later standard and not specifically 64bit but usually when I see two options like this one is for 32bit and the other 64bit operating systems.

Well I played it fine with the ss2 .exe so guess that's the best one for me :)

Yeah in my experience sse2 is more stable than i686, which exhibits a few of its own unique bugs if I remeber correctly  ;D

My computer is going mental and refusing to extract glestadv.ini properly. Worked yesterday with 0.2.11 and just tried that and get the same results. Open it in Notepad and all I get it

Quote
FontConsole=Verdana
FontDisplay=Verdana
FontMenu=Verdana

and it's 1k in size. If I open the whole .rar it shows it should be 57k, but even opening it from that I get the same results.

Tried extracting 0.2.11 again and get the same error. Even the file I had extracted yesterday is now 1k (have it extracted in my download drive as well as C:, well I did until I just deleted all references of it and restarted my laptop to see if it would work.

Any idea of anything that could be causing this? Weirdest behaviour of a PC I have ever seen! Or at least to get me going now if you could copy and paste the contents of glestadv.ini here I can paste it in (after setting fullscreen=true and resolution to 1920x200 anyway) save and see if it wants to work.

VERY ODD!!

OK just tried on my desktop, freshly downloading 0.2.12 .zip and extracting with 7zip (use WinRAR on my lappy.)

Exactly the same happens!

Tried downloading the .rar from your homepage (0.2.11 version) and same thing again. I really don't understand this really strange behaviour! Two computers, two extraction programs, two compression formats. The only thin different to yesterday is I'm on my home network, not my work one. But I even tried disabling the network adapter on my desktop and same thing still happened.

Hmm, that is very odd indeed.

I think the problem is your permissions, which is rare on XP, but on windows, far from un-heard of. I unfortunately cannot tell you how to set permissions on XP, though it is most likely from the properties dialogue, possibly under its own tab (either security or permissions).

Set the glest directories permissions to allow both your acount and any other things to have full control.

If needed, here's a copy of my ini (modified)

Thanks for that Omega. Just copying that didn't work so I removed everything and installed again from scratch, including Glest3.2.2 and have it back up and running.

Looking at it the glestadv.ini is basically blank until the first time the game is run. Guess I had broken something else and it wasn't reinitialising. What that could of been I'm not sure. You don't usually have problems with copying over glestadv.ini or other files when upgrading versions of GAE do you?

Quick question: When I go to put this one my housemates computer do I need to do an actual install of Glest or does it simply unpack in the specified folder, so I can just copy my directory onto his computer? Guessing, with it being multi-platform, I should just be able to copy across. Would make things simpler with added extras (which I've now got to put back in...)

OH, and out of interest what are your own modifications to the .ini? As it wasn't the display changes I stated I use.
