File Hosting for Glest Mods
« on: 21 August 2009, 19:00:40 »
Personally, I've gotten pretty fed up with Mediafire lately.  Pictures and icons are being "not found" or Mediafire will just lose the file altogether.  So I've personally switched to Filefactory temporarily.

I had an idea about file hosting though.  What if we all decided on one site and made an account?  Then, we would share the username and password among ourselves and then make sharing mods even easier!  This would be especially attractive to new modders to Glest, because then they wouldn't have to go through the trouble of making an account on a random site.

I researched free file hosting services, and a lot are not as nice as Mediafire.  Many require you to make accounts, and even then you might have to wait to download the file.  They want you to pay for a "premium" service.  But there are some sites that are better than Mediafire.  I researched free file hosting services here and here.

I like the site http://www.wikiupload.com/.  It is very nice because it doesn't require you to pay for any "premium" services.  All are the same.  I also don't think there is a limit to the amount of files you can have in your account.  You are not given a quota.

I'll make an account on Wiki Upload and give you the account username and password.  There doesn't seem to be any rules on the site besides prohibiting "posting of any illegal software or pornographic materials" which "is prohibited and will be reported to proper authorities".

Current Site: http://www.filefront.com/
User Name: Glest Files
Password: PM me please!

I really hope that GAE will soon end up with a good result. If this is the case we will hopefully all find a place within this project on sourceforge.
For now I think its better to look for another place to hold our stuff.  My webspace on titusgames is nearly full, so this is not a real option.
Anyone has an idea where we can get some webspace( best with ftp-access for the team) where we can share and develop our project(s)?

I like Wiki Upload.

I made a public account on the site:

Login: Glest Mods
Password: glest

Now we can all use it and there will be less confusion!

Well Filefront was kinda set up and aimed at gamers and developers so it seems to make sense.

http://www.filefront.com/

They do delete stuff though. After a month on no activity you get an email telling you it's in a delete cue, second time it enters a delete cue they wont warn you. If people check you can always remove it from a delete cue and keep it active but that does require a bit of housework...

Most other sites that let you upload any type of file are at least as restrictive though.

Ok, I made an account on Filefront.  The Login stuff is the same (same username & pass).  Enjoy! ;D

I think that while a sole account is a great idea, there should be a backup.

It doesn't matter, the account it only for Glest, titi!  The account name is Glest mods; what else could it be? ;D

Looks like somebody was already doing a Glest one but not sure how long since it's been maintained. Hasn't got the latest Glest, just 3.2.1

http://www.filefront.com/listing/pub2/Glest

Lot of Mods and things already on there though...

Not sure how you would find out who is running it but may be worth seeing if it can be taken over and neatened up if it's not still active. Couldn't see any files at all under the account you opened.

I also agree that putting usernames and passwords publicly viewable generally isn't a good idea. It's not that hard for people to request it in the forum or IRC if they have something they want to upload.

This is a good idea.  I'll start the public account, and maybe I'll find out a way to make it public, but only the user can delete/add files.  So that way, people can see the files and download them but cannot change anything.

I'm also going to change the password for the existing account above.

So in the future, if you have a mod to upload, make a post about it first with screens and such (to prove you have made a mod) and I will give you the password.  Also, I will periodically change the password.

If glest.110mb.com ever goes commercial (meaning I buy a domain, which needs more ad revenue), I will make a custom FTP and PHP based uploader part, which does not support deleting by a non-admin (me). In short, everything would be safe.

Downside: we don't have a domain! :D

Update:

Apparently it is impossible to change the password for the account I made.  So I made a new one!  The new user name is "Glest Files".  PM me for the password.  I also updated the original post to include this information. ;)
