Evil Genius semi-sequel?

Change of vote is allowed in case you realize something l8r.

I have decided it's time to start my Evil Genius 1.5 project up again. I have decided this time to search out an engine first and then start working on the game from scratch instead of converting the original game.

For those who don't know the game it's fairly easy to Google, tho the wiki doesn't say much about it.

ok if you are looking to make it like evil genius , the game engine is not the one you want at all , this can't have animated textures dynamic lighting and alot of other vitual componets , i mean unless you want to go in and code it your self , so i feel like you'll be wasting your time trying to create this game with this engine , unless you have a great ability to code , model , texture and re-rewrite the game engine , but if you can do this then sweet  ;)

Not too worried about animated textures I think (Only thing that would really need it is maybe the monitor stations)
Dynamic lighting? Not sure I gotta have it. I'd like to have night/day and rooms not powered need to have their lights out, but I think this is all doable with color effects (dark colors for darkened rooms, but that might mean whole new textures) or maybe I could apply a filter to the room (I haven't played your game yet to know, if a character were poisoned would they be turned green as a status affect signal? That same affect could maybe be applied to a room.)

no, your probably right. this is why i'm doing this, I want opinions of those involved with the engine to help me decide. I don't know what the engine is capable of and so I can't make that decision for myself.

I am certain you are all right that animated textures in glest is an impossibility, but there is a way to get a monitor screen to look like it is flashing, showing different screens or other things.  If you make the model of the computer module's screen inset into the wall, you can do this:  1. Make 2 or more 2d squares that are straight up.  They need to the the size of the screen.  2. Each one is textured to show the screens you want to show.  3.  You need to know animation.  Take the 2nd frame and move it in front of the first frame rapidly, and then back after a few seconds and it gives the illusion of a refreshed screen.  If you do not understand this, I can explain more fully when I have more time, or leave it up to other modelers to give their suggestions.

yea you can totally make it look animated , by using the animations with just planes , but thats not the whole point the whole point is , turning the whole game into a different game , he would have to start from scratch the basic engine and no offense one guy doing that , would take forever

I agree.  And even the most proficient coders I know of are only able to chip away (please don't take offense anyone), because this engine is not super simple to modify.

i do understand what you mean. i had wondered if it could change textures of objects mid-game, figured on the idea, but currently i'm more worried about implementing things like minions sitting at a station to collect data (in place of gathering wood/gold/vespean gas) and how to send minions away to do global tasks.

you'll have to re-rewrite code , best thing to do is mod this rts and not try to change it into a whole different game , you would need a great team and this engine doesn't support particle systems from 3d programs either
