Mod Repository
« on: 14 December 2009, 13:27:19 »
I think we need a repository and some kind of program to access the repository and install mods in your Glest installation.
It might be a bit of work but it will be so convenient, then the last obstacle would be able to make it so you can update the repository easily.

It would have to be cross-platform.

Do you mean something like Battle for Wesnoth has?  If so, I'm all for it.

BFW your kidding me, I use to love that game. I made a little saurian mod for it. Yes anyways that mod repository would be great. It would be really nice to have a dna download though for the bigger mods since it could be hard to implement a un 7zipper in glest...

Mod installation isn't hard for experienced people, but I remember when I was new to Glest, installing the Megapack was hell, I'd never seen the Glest folder structure, and I was so happy when I got the Megapack installed!

So yah John, I'm talking about something similar to what Wesnoth has.
But instead of on the menu, a separate program. We'd have a separate program because we wouldn't be able to get an official release of Glest with that menu addition in.

yah you could easily get a program that uses dna to download stuff. Most popular mmos use dna to be downloaded

Could you write this program? ;D
We'd need to have an easy way to add to the repository, and an update thingy to install updates.
If we're all good with having something like this, lets start designing it!

Hmm, I'm trying to think if I can... I have a few methods that will let me use an engine to render (since we obviously can't use the windows API, not only is it a pain in the ass, but its (naturally) windows only). How does it get a list of what to download though? Everything is hosted so differently, and there's no direct links to most mods... As well as implimenting with 7zip wouldn't be easy (what's its licensing anyway?).

Stop with this Windows only crap, make it multi-platform, or don't bother.

Wow, you've been posting in a lot of old topics today! Probably never, unless someone wants to pay for good hosting, because there's no easy way to get downloads since the direct links are always changing on hosting sites stopping them from working (often so they can make you view their ads). So... screwed there?
