Diplomacy and Trade
« on: 15 February 2010, 20:42:45 »
Hi... so the other day i was playing "Rome: Total War" and i thought: can i make a diplomat unit for Glest? And what about a building or unit (like a merchant that would be be capable of storage, but quite mobile) that would allow you to trade an amount of resources for another (ex: 1000 Lumber for 500 Gold). I believe that you all though about it, but i couldnt find a topic about this. Maybe because i have been searching in the wrong place... is this topic in the wright spot?

Yeah I think this is in the right spot...
It's possible... you just have to know how to model and then you need to edit some XMLs...
Cool Idea though.  :)

You can't make allies and enemies, they are all set in the setup of a custom game and can't be changed in-game, and for trade, you can only create an illusion of trade, and the AI doesn't use it(as far as I know).

PS:
Rome: Total War is awesome!
I bet you would lose to me because I have tons of troops and control a lot of territory, I just love that game!!!

While diplomacy and trade can be cool in a game, I think the scale of Glest doesn't really lend itself well it.  Age of Empires is a little bit higher-scale (hundreds of units instead of dozens), and it only does a half-assed job with that sort of stuff.  Basically, I think that unless somebody were to make a fork of Glest that deals with entire tribes/nations/whatever, then diplomacy and trade don't really have much of a place here, except maybe in scripted scenarios.

What game?
The name of the game is "Rome: Total War".  It's part of a series including other games with "Total War" in the titles.

Thanks for your posts.  I knew i couldnt make allies or enemies in glest; i was thinking in bribing an enemy unit so that he would give up or become a friendly unit.

PS: Glad to know someone else likes Rome: Total War. I have a question about that game -Archmage-, I'm already the richest and most advanced faction, but i cant make my economy stable... this as nothing to do with glest, but i would like help with it.

Well, use diplomacy to protect yourself, and spend wisely, only on what you need, otherwise save the money, also patience will be very useful. I am by far the richest faction, and also by far the most powerful, I went to war with Gaul, and took two villages before they begged me for a ceasefire, also, I took down the Macedonians pretty quickly.

My problem is I don't have enough support yet to take Rome... :P

Set the tax rates and monitor them so your people are happy, and your sucking as much money out of their pockets as possible. :D

I know one of the proposed features for GAE was the ability to convert an enemy unit to your own side, but I think that's a long way off yet.

Cool, still, I had an extremely powerful army, could crush anyone who attacked me, also, I won a battle 27(me) against 181(enemy), and I won, they were completely obliterated and I had 16 troops left!
All I did to achieve that victory was to out-manoeuvre the enemy and strike them in the sides, phalanx formations are absolutely deadly, I always surround them, with peasants attacking the front so they don't turn and reform.
You have to develop different battle tactic and very fast, just notice what the enemy is doing and what they are going to do, and then defend against possible enemy attacks, if cavalry are approaching some of your legionaries, then you need to get them in the testudo(I think that's the word used...) formation, so they take the least amount of casualties from the charge.
