my issue with glest!
« on: 3 March 2010, 04:20:47 »
Why is that my archers focus on one guy or two guys when there are a lot of them why don't two of my archer attacks a different enemy rather then one or two?

yes, thats right  :-\
Please think about it and try to describe a logic how it should be, this would be really helpful.

( update: But maybe this kind of micromanagement in a battle which must be done by a player manually currently is fun and challanging too ? )

I like how Homeworld does it.  If you tell your group to attack a single enemy ship, the whole group attacks that ship.  However, you can also tell it to attack a whole selection, in which case they'll spread out their firepower.  Each of your vessels picks a target and then keeps attacking other members of the enemy group until they're all destroyed.  I haven't played in a while, but if I remember correctly, you press the attack button and then hold alt while drawing a lasso around the target group.

Well thats not detailed enough and i think we have a very similar behaviour of the things you described in glest too. Attack a unit and everyone attacks this unit. give an attack command to the ground and your units start to attack everyone in this region and on their way to it.
But the problem we all see is the way all atacking unit select their targets. Usually they all attack the same unit on one side of the front. But what should they do instead.
Please describe this targetselection as detailed as possible, so we can maybe implement it.

But if we find a good algorithm I still see the problem that the computer player takes advantage of this too! It will be much much harder to fight an AI if it uses a really good algorithm to attack you! So maybe its good how bad it is now :/ and as I said before currently its you who controls much of the fight and this is one part of the fun playing glest in my opinion! But if the computer will do it for you one day, this part of the gaming is lost. I know its sometimes annoying if you see how dumb your troops react, but on the other hand you are happy if you can beat an AI player because you know that its better to attack a good unit first or whatever.

How about this you know how my archer units attack mostly on two or three enemies when there is like a lot of them I just don't like how most of my archers focus on single enemy. Why can't I just select my archers like a group of them and press "S" and like highlight over a some enemies and release my mouse and then my archers that I selected will attack separately on different enemies that I highlighted rather then my whole archers attacking on a single enemies. :-\
