I like ubuntu(gnome) because its not so feature loaded and slow.
For graphics problems in linux:
In general you can say if you don't have an nvidia or intel graphics card you always get into trouble!
There might be some ati cards that work, but i for myself never saw any stable driver for 3d videos and so on. Not a closed source driver from Ati direct nor an open source driver. They all always feel like beta drivers ....
This might change in the future becasue Ati opened the specs for their cards, but up to now I (personally) didn't saw anything really stable.
@archmage: You usually don't have to update your graphics driver in linux manually. This is done by a system update if its needed.
Its not that complicated as in windows where YOU have to install the drivers and everything. You only have to choose the closed source nvidia driver after your (k)ubuntu installation thats all( the system will ask you for this ).
