Kubuntu is not working, is this because of my nvidia geforce 7000m graphics card?

I always had a lot of graphics trouble with Kubuntu.  For example, I'd open up a program and it would show the desktop straight through it.  Also, it's a bit slower than the other Linux distributions I've tried because it spends too much of your resources on "eye candy".  I've run regular Ubuntu for a long time and I've had a lot of success with it.  I've also tried Xubuntu which is designed to be less resource-intensive, but I didn't like the interface quite as much.  I recommend Ubuntu over Kubuntu.

Edit: Also, with Kubuntu the programs can be very confusing because they all have names that start with 'K' and most mean absolutely nothing to do with what the program actually does.  On top of that, customizing settings and stuff like that is much easier in Ubuntu.

Not exactly.  They come with different programs, different settings, different options, etc.  Overall I think Ubuntu is much more user-friendly.

Kubuntu is Ubuntu with KDE.

And if you compare Gnome with KDE you will say that the first one sucks  :P

No I will not  :P
I like ubuntu(gnome) because its not so feature loaded and slow.

For graphics problems in linux:
In general you can say if you don't have an nvidia or intel graphics card you always get into trouble!
There might be some ati cards that work, but i for myself never saw any stable driver for 3d videos and so on. Not a closed source driver from Ati direct nor an open source driver. They all always feel like beta drivers ....
This might change in the future becasue Ati opened the specs for their cards, but up to now I (personally) didn't saw anything really stable.

@archmage: You usually don't have to update your graphics driver in linux manually. This is done by a system update if its needed.
Its not that complicated as in windows where YOU have to install the drivers and everything. You only have to choose the closed source nvidia driver after your (k)ubuntu installation thats all( the system will ask you for this ).

Actually nVidia and Linux almost never get along, because of nVidia I've had to re-install my operating system multiple times, ATI always works. 8)

??? but what did you do?  :o
You don't have to install anything for nvidia, it simply works!

But if you tried to install the drivers directly and manually from nvidia ,... well you got a problem.

Well back when we were installing 8.04 we had extremely complicated driver issues with nVidia, my Dad finally figured it out.

And, yes I did try getting something from the nVidia site, it destroyed my operating system. :o  The thing is ATI just works. 8)

The problem is sitting right in front of the monitor :P

You probably just messed up X, not the whole system. If you are not familar with Xorg configuration and using shell to edit it, you should not install any graphics driver manually. As titi mentioned, just use the packages of your distribution.

The proprietary drivers of nVidia are really good. ATI has some stability problems and they are always lacking behind kernel and X development. Because of that and the fact that the newest driver does not support my card anymore, i switched to the opensource ATI drivers wich work just fine, also 3d. Yeah for open specs.

DE discussion:
Nothing is better than the other. It's everyones own decision which suits him more, nothing else. Be happy you have this choice. Btw, i'm using KDE.

Actually I was following instructions that weren't very helpful, I had to refer all over the internet to learn how to do things, and the nVidia thing wasn't very helpful when it didn't work. >:(

That's why we got a new graphics card, because the nVidia one(wasn't even a graphics card) sucked, and Glest would lag even on very very low settings, we have a nice powerful graphics card in that computer now, and that is our top computer too, now all 3 of our computers(excluding my Moms) uses the ATI Radeon HD series(Main computer: 4670, Secondary computer: 3300, Laptop: 3200, and just so you know, my Moms computer uses some cruddy nVidia graphics card, you can play Glest on it but it will lag if you get to many units on the screen, amazingly enough my laptops graphics performance is far ahead of my Moms :D)

You have to do that for everything with KDE! :D  It took me probably half an hour of searching to figure out how to turn off tap-to-click on KDE, but in Gnome it takes a matter of seconds.

You know, I want to try Ubuntu, because I'm starting to get sick of KDE4.0+, I set all this stuff up once, and right after that we had to re-install the operating system..........yah, I don't hate "Kubuntu", I hate KDE 4.0+...........the KDE 3 series was great though, Kubuntu 8.04 used it and Kubuntu 8.04 was the best release ever until my Dad made a fatal mistake and destroyed it! :( The computer didn't warn him at all as he un-installed some library thinking to re-install it, but without that library only half the things on the computer would kinda work and we decided to move on to a newer version of Kubuntu, and to think that before Kubuntu I used Mandriva(blauck! I hated mandriva!).
