Should Off Topic Posts Count?
« on: 12 March 2010, 02:49:13 »
Here's the big question: Should posts made on the off topic board count towards your post count?

On one hand, it's still a post, even if off topic, on the other hand, it's easily abused, since everything is off topic and anyone can say 'posting to increase my post count' and it's still off topic (therefore, fitting in the board description).

What do you guys think?

That's the reason I didn't really want a off topic board...  ::) Cause for every forum it is like that. (Not that off topic posts don't count, but that posting in the off topic board is abused...)

So it depends, a few off topic posts isn't too bad.
While if we have like off topic games like "ABC game" or "Last post wins", etc.
So if it gets hectic, crazy, etc, well...  ::)

Then again, unless the community gets like way more popular than now, so  we probably shouldn't have to worry too much.  :P
Thinking.  :P

I don't know if there's a way to take off post count short of deleting posts......?

I think I agree with Ultifd though. It's good for now as long as it doesn't get out of hand.

I've never understood the whole thing about post count anyway.

If you"re helpful then people will recognize that. I don"t even look at post count, titles, or stars around here. Just names.

Fair enough. Judge lightly though, this IS the OT board...

I agree with Hectate's opinion: there is no need to do anything to post count (you could simply remove it, it wouldn't change a thing).

Agreed, and besides, half the posts on the other boards are off-topic anyway. :P

Yeah, I agree, OT posting should count for now,and it shouldn't be a problem until we have lots of new people in the community.  :P

I don't think OT posts should count, because this is really the Glest forum, and if people are just posting the majority of their posts here, then, well, it shouldn't really go under your name.

Yeah, but that isn't really happening/at least until more people come, like I said earlier...  ::)

To whom are you speaking?  It is not I that started a whole topic on the matter.  I'm not the only one that cares.

I still contend that the karma system would obsolete the silly post count measure of seniority.

Whatever, posts counts works fine...

Karma would be terrible, there isn't any way to stop it from being abused, and you could give me bad ratings just because I believe we were created by some higher/more powerful being.

When you take karma or give it you need to give a reason then the moderadors can cansel the - or + karma you did if he dosen't think the reason in good.

I agree with John, and besides, the Karma can still be abused, and moderators have better things to do than to run around and continuously fix peoples ratings.

No!  What I said was that you can NEVER down-rate a post.  You can only give it a thumbs up or none at all.

This kind of reminds me of Roman gladiator games.  The people either gave a thumbs-up or a closed fist, never a thumbs-down, like we've been led to believe.  In the same way, you can only give a thumbs-up.

To my knowledge, there is no known SMF mods that will do this, and I have no intent on creating such a feature myself. Since the only default karma system does allow negative votes, and it can be very easily abused (ie: I don't like X! Ha, take that! Negative 10000 karma!). With NO way to change it. For the time being, no karma system will be implimented.
