Edit: Perhaps I spoke too soon. On my second test, I adjusted the screen resolution in glest.ini to 1200x800, and when I ran MegaGlest again, it immediately crashed. A console popped up and disappeared before I could read what it said, but here is my glest.ini:

Edit again: On my third attempt, I set resolution to 1280x800 and it ran fine. However, it wouldn't let me take a screenshot with 'e' during the custom game screen. It didn't crash the game, but it didn't do anything else either. Anyway, here's what I noticed wrong there:

As you can see, it's a four-player map, but all eight slots are shown. The extra slots aren't actually available (they can only be 'closed'), but usually extra slots aren't shown at all. I'm about to test an eight-player game, so I'll report back to say how it went.
