Best one? Which one do you use/prefer to use?

I use mIRC thats the one i like =), you could just use mibbit

I always used mIRC, even bought a license at one point. I'd still use it if A. I was on IRC enough to warrant it and B. if I could find my keycode.

I like it because there's lots of cool scripiting that you can do. I had one that paged me when someone said my name, so I could jump out of game and see what was up.

I just found out that XChat isn't really free... it has a 30 day trial.
oh well, I'll just use mIRC for now.

Xchat is free, but there is also a commercial version of xchat.
The creator of xchat simply lets the windows users pay that are not able to compile for themself

And the sold xchat version has some little changes compared to the free one too.

But there are other people who provide xchat for free and this is legal! look here for example:

Yeah, I saw those versions too, but usually I trust the official version, but I guess in this case...
But really, I just want to know what client you guys usually use.

I see I'm coming late but I use xchat in Linux (I think pidgin kind of sucks in comparison but it's good enough for a casual session

I did not know it was not free on Windows (and I voted for it before I found out about it).
I think it's really cool and the feature mentioned by Hectate, as well as many others, is available in Xchat too (in Preferences->Plugins I think).

The unofficial build should be ok (good post, titi!

)but run an antivirus as well as a malware scanner on it before installing.

already installed, but will do as you say just in case...

Yeah, I am pretty happy with XChat right now...as long it is the not the one that is causing my network issues...

Thanks, I use it sometimes...I use an IRC Client more usually, since it uses less memory sometimes...

Well, later on I'm going to make a thread/Wiki Page for IRC related stuff, probably just about clients at first. Comparing them, listing by OS...

Used to use Chatzilla but now use xchat exclusively.

Another one worth checking out is Smuxi (or so I've heard).

All "unofficial" ones are called Ychat..., and since I don't pay for xchat...I use Ychat.
Xchat does have an official windows version though, but it's shareware...
Anyways, I think it is the same thing, we don't want two different options in the poll...

Actually they're not all called YChat... that's just one particular build.

http://code.google.com/p/xchat-wdk/ is a more recent build called XChat-WDK.

Yeah, I tried that out. I think the layout was a bit different and some other things I thought was annoying, so I still use the Silverex version.
Sorry, I meant all unofficial builds are called Ychat for 2.8.6 only...
