Playing Glest
« on: 14 April 2010, 00:49:29 »
I'm horrible at glest whenever i try to play I always loose  :P no matter what I do; I always try to get alot of soldiers and archers. The only time I actually won was at the tutorials. Oh! and just so you know I don't play multiplayer .... I really don't know how to play like that; its really confusing. Anyways is there any suggestions that might help me improve my game play and some of the stuff many people do or talk about don't make to much sence like how do ppl do mods?

Regarding multiplayer, yeah... but it is improving so just wait.
(I remember when I tried to play multiplayer with GAE and I always got this black screen, I was so frustrated... then with megaglest is is awesome!...)

You could watch my videos, I think I have some good strategies in some of them, others, not so good.  ;)

And don't worry, you will be fine before you know it... I was just like you (I think) and now I am...well...at least I can prove a "match" against others.  :O

Try looking here and here...

Good Luck. Have fun.  :)

I'll give you of what I think of them.
So as of right now...
MG has 8 player support, better multiplayer support/gameplay, better map and g3d editors, particles (so more fancy), font "changelings', font color, and more.
GAE? Tons of useful features that can make your day very happy.  :| like save game, auto repair, patrol and guard
supposedly water units, etc. etc.
Glest is the "base" of megaglest and GAE.

So anyways, basically just practice and practice. That applies to everything.  :)

If you're a bit overwhelmed in a battle, you can hit 'P' to pause.  You can look around and even issue orders while it's paused, and then your guys will go ahead and do them when you un-pause.  You can also use + and - to speed up or slow down the game.

Regarding GAE and MegaGlest, basically the guys who originally made Glest stopped working on it a while ago, so some other programmers started working on new versions based on the original Glest code.  The two different "forks" are Glest Advanced Engine and Megaglest.  You can download GAE and extract it right into your Glest directory, whereas MG is a much bigger download because it comes with a lot more stuff (like new factions to play with).  Also, both MG and GAE has an "easy" setting to make the AI a little dumber.  Personally, I would recommend GAE because it's a much smaller download, so that's kind of a quick fix I guess.

Pressing P is kinda cheating, though, right?  ::) You also can't do that when playing a multiplayer game...  ::)
 :O

MG is more fun, in my opinion.  :|

Yah, P is cheating and I also like MG best too. But you can do + / - and P in MG.

I don't think it's cheating.  The AI can make unlimited instant decisions, so what's the difference?

Sorry for double posting but... I was playing this one game of glest and it was long after a while it looked like I was winning but I was running short of gold and I had tons of workers and a quite of bit of archers and swordman but after a few groups of the enamy I lost many of my army anyways towards the end I had ran out of gold and needed to search for more and I sent my archers first then my workers to find more I ran into a few enamys killed them off then later on I found some and I let my archers guard the area while my wokers work and walk back to the castle I needed atleast enough gold to make a another castle near gold and I did and then unfurtanly more enemies came and destoryed my  archers and swordsman and in the area all that was left was workers LOL I made them work for gold until they died and the castle got destoryed too.(i made a 30 sec video of them dying) Some workers were left then I just made them run away. Back at my base I had tried to produce more workers and archers but I soon ran out of gold and I still didn't have enough to fight anyways at this point all I can do was wait til the enemy came and killed me. Then they came and destoryed everything even my cow (they left those for last). And after killing my cows all I had left was 2 workers and they were still running for their lives anyways I couldn't keep it up forever and it was GAME OVER I LOSE (that was one of the best games I played eventhough I lost)

Camstudio is free.

I think it would be best if you got into a multiplayer game, not that I know how to do it, but it can't be hard. :)

Yes, as Archmage said, it is free... you are probably thinking of....Camtasia...the $300 (I think) counterpart...
I use it for all my videos, and they are pretty good... I think.  :look:
As long as edit the options correctly, and use a good codec, then it will be alright...  ::)

Well, I think it is pretty easy now...all you have to do is type in the IP address of the "hoster" then press enter to type and check...  ::) http://www.whatsmyip.org/

What if the host has multiple computers?
Doesn't matter really, unless all the computers are running Glest at the time, and they are all running a custom game, and have open slots for "networks"... but that never really happens...right?  :|
